What read range should we realistically expect?

Expect cylinder range, not catalogue range. Datasheet figures are measured in free air on a flat test plate, so treat them as a ceiling and confirm the real number on your own cylinders. Transmit power is capped by the Indian licence-free allocation, so you cannot simply turn the reader up to rescue a weak tag.

Real-world range depends on tag size, mounting position, antenna gain and polarisation, and how densely cylinders are packed. A dense pallet of steel cylinders will always read worse than a single cylinder on a trolley. Design for it:

  • Use a UHF handheld reader for yard audits, dealer stock counts and exception handling — an operator can walk the stack and fill in the gaps.
