UWB Forklift Tracking: Live Location for Every Truck

Forklifts are among the most expensive assets on a warehouse floor, yet most sites cannot say where each truck is, how much of a shift it spends idle, or where it put down the last pallet. Drivers radio for locations, supervisors walk the aisles, and the fleet is sized on guesswork.

A UWB forklift tracking system answers those questions continuously. A terminal on each truck ranges to fixed anchors and is placed to under 30 cm indoors, switches to satellite positioning in the yard, and sends every position over 4G to a live map. Below are the parts we supply for it and what each one does.

How it works

  1. 1

Fit a terminal to each truck

The ID-UWB-V10 fixes to the overhead guard or roof with its magnet and runs from the truck’s 12–24 V supply, so there is no tag battery to charge. It works on any make or type of truck: counterbalance, reach, pallet and clamp trucks, tow tractors and AGVs.

  2. 2

Fix battery anchors at known points

ID-UWB-B50 anchors go on walls, columns or poles with no power or network cable. Each runs 3–5 years on its battery. Two anchors cover an aisle; open floors need at least three in view of the truck.

  3. 3

Positions go to the platform over 4G

The terminal measures its distance to the anchors around it and uploads the result itself, indoors by UWB and outdoors by satellite, so trucks are followed from the racking to the dock and across the yard.

  4. 4

Act on what the map shows

The platform keeps a live map, playback of every route, geofences with alarms, and statistics on distance travelled and running against standing time, and can pass events to your WMS or ERP.

Hardware you need

Truck terminal (indoor UWB, outdoor GNSS, 4G)

The ID-UWB-V10 is the one device on the truck. UWB indoors is rated under 30 cm unobstructed; outdoors it uses satellite positioning at 1–2 m, or ±3 cm with the RTK variant and a correction source. It is IP67 and rated −40 °C to +85 °C.

Cable-free anchors

ID-UWB-B50 battery anchors give the terminals fixed reference points without cabling the ceiling: 0.3 m accuracy unobstructed, over 100 m range, IP67. The count depends on aisle layout and racking height, so it is planned from your floor plan.

Wired anchors for permanent installations

Where cable runs exist, PoE anchors such as the indoor ID-UWB-P30 or the aluminium IP67 ID-UWB-R40 also locate UWB-only tags, so the same infrastructure can track people and equipment as well as trucks.

Pedestrian and vehicle collision warning

The ID-UWB-X10 on a truck ranges to other units and tagged pedestrians and switches relays for a beacon, horn or speed-limit input at a distance you set from 0 to 100 m. Staff carry a UWB badge such as the ID-UWB-C20; confirm the pairing for your layout with us.

Software

The software

The UWB positioning platform does the position calculation and turns it into something supervisors can use: every truck on a live floor map, playback of any route over any period, geofences that raise an alarm when a truck enters a pedestrian zone or leaves its area, and statistics on each truck’s distance, running time and standing time. A barcode or RFID read at pick-up can bind a load to the truck, so the platform records where each pallet or reel was set down without manual entry. The platform is licensed per project, and events can be passed to your WMS or ERP; ask us for a demo and a quote for your site.

Why teams use it

  • See every truck on a live map, indoors to under 30 cm and in the yard by satellite
  • No ceiling cabling: battery anchors and 4G terminals
  • Size the fleet from real utilisation, not guesswork
  • Record where each load was put down, without manual scanning
  • Spot wasted travel and redesign routes and layouts
  • Warn drivers and pedestrians before they meet at close range

Frequently asked questions

Do the trucks need modifying?

No. The ID-UWB-V10 terminal holds on with a magnet and takes power from the truck’s 12–24 V supply, so it fits any make or type of forklift, reach truck, clamp truck, tow tractor or AGV. Add bolts or a bracket for rough floors or fast vehicles.

How accurate is UWB forklift tracking?

Indoors the system is rated under 30 cm in unobstructed space (0.3 m with the battery anchors); racking and walls reduce that, so anchors are planned around the layout. Outdoors the terminal uses satellite positioning at 1–2 m, or ±3 cm with the RTK variant.

Do I need to run cables for the anchors?

Not with ID-UWB-B50 battery anchors. They run 3–5 years on a battery and need no network, because the terminal on the truck uploads its own position over 4G. Wired PoE anchors are an alternative where cable runs already exist.

How many anchors will my warehouse need?

It depends on the layout: two anchors give the position along an aisle, and an open floor needs at least three in view of each truck. Send us a floor plan with aisle widths and racking heights for a count.

Can the same system prevent forklift collisions?

It can warn. The ID-UWB-X10 ranges to other trucks and to pedestrians carrying UWB badges, and switches a beacon, horn or speed-limit input at a set distance. It supports trained operators and marked walkways; it does not replace them.
