NFC Tags and Readers for Digital Product Passports

A digital product passport gives one physical unit its own online record, and the easiest way to reach that record is a tap. An NFC tag on the product holds the address of that unit's passport page, so a buyer with an NFC-enabled smartphone can open it with no app, and the brand can show origin, product details and service history for that exact serial number.

This page covers the tags and readers needed to carry those passports: printed NFC labels, mini stickers and epoxy tags, tamper-detect labels for sealed goods, a dual UHF and NFC inlay for products that also pass through RFID warehouses, and an NFC handheld for binding tags at the end of the production line.

How it works

  1. 1

Create the product and its units

Set up the product record in the passport software, then create a separate passport for each serial number you make.

  2. 2

    Encode and bind a tag

Write the passport link to an NFC tag and bind it to that unit, using an NFC phone or an Android NFC handheld on the line.

  3. 3

Fix the tag to the product

Stick a label on the product or its packaging, embed an inlay under the brand label, or hang an epoxy tag, picking a format that will last as long as the product.

  4. 4

    Buyers tap to view

Anyone with an NFC phone taps the tag to open that unit's page and can send the brand a service request from there, while each tap is logged for the brand.

Hardware you need

NFC labels and stickers

Printed NTAG213 or NTAG216 labels on a roll for packaging, the 12 × 8.5 mm mini NTAG213 sticker for small products, and the NTAG213 wet inlay for embedding under a brand label.

All NFC Tags & Labels

Durable NFC tags

The 30 mm NFC epoxy tag (NTAG213, 215 or 216) for products that are handled a lot, and the EC025 epoxy tag with a string for hanging on goods.

All NFC Tags

Tamper-detect label

The NTAG213 TT authentication label can report whether its tamper loop has been broken, which suits sealed bottles and closures.

Dual-frequency inlay

The ID-4020-EM4425 inlay carries UHF and NFC in a single tag, so a unit can be checked by UHF readers in stock (listed UHF range up to 0.5 m, depending on reader and antenna) and tapped by a buyer's phone.

Binding reader

The FX100 Android NFC handheld can encode and bind tags at the line where a phone is not practical.

The software

The passport software on IdentiumOne lets a brand build product records, create a passport per unit, bind NFC tags from its console, add lifecycle events such as manufacture, sale and service, and handle service requests raised from the public page. It also records scans so brands can see where products are being checked. The tags here only carry a link, so passport content lives in the software and can change after shipping. Why teams use it

  • Buyers open a unit's record by tapping the product, with no app to install
  • Each serial number gets its own page, not one shared page per model
  • Service requests arrive already linked to the exact unit
  • Tag formats range from tiny stickers to rugged epoxy tags, so the carrier can match the product
  • Dual UHF and NFC inlays let one tag serve stock checks and buyer taps

Frequently asked questions

Which NFC chip should I use for product passports?

NTAG213 is the usual choice because it holds a web link comfortably and works with NFC phones. Pick NTAG215 or NTAG216 when you need more memory, and the NTAG213 TT label when the tag should show that a seal has been opened.

Can customers read the tag with an ordinary phone?

Most current smartphones with NFC open a link stored on an NTAG tag when it is tapped, without a separate app. The tag holds only the link and the content sits on the passport page, so it can be updated after the product has shipped.

Does an NFC passport meet the EU digital product passport rules by itself?

No tag or software does that on its own. These tags and the passport platform give you a per-unit record and something on each unit that points to it; the data each product category must hold is set by the applicable rules, so check them for your sector.

Can a passport tag also be used for RFID inventory?

Yes, with the ID-4020-EM4425 dual-frequency inlay. Its UHF side can be read by UHF readers during stock checks, at a listed range of up to 0.5 m depending on reader and antenna, and its NFC side by a buyer's phone, so one tag does both jobs.
