HF (ISO 15693) or UHF for a library

Most library management software, staff pads, self-check kiosks and exit gates work with 13.56 MHz labels under ISO 15693, the standard the ICODE SLIX family follows. An HF label has a short, controlled read zone, so a stack of books on the desk is read one item at a time, and the SLIX2 labels carry an EAS bit that an HF exit gate reads to raise the alarm on an un-issued book.

UHF labels (EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-6C) are read from a distance: the UHF labels here list up to 5–7 m, so a handheld counts a whole shelf without pulling books, and issue and return can run on a desktop UHF reader. They need UHF readers and gates rather than the HF equipment most libraries already own, so UHF suits a new installation or a stock-audit layer added to an existing barcode library.

What to put in a tender BOQ

A label line in a BOQ should state what the product page states: the standard (ISO 15693 at 13.56 MHz, or EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-6C for UHF), the chip family (ICODE SLIX, SLIX2, UCODE 9, Higgs 10 or Higgs EC), the label size, whether an EAS bit is required, the printing on the face (UID, accession barcode, QR code, library name or logo) and the packaging (rolls on a 3-inch core). Quantity is the collection size plus spares for re-labelling. The library RFID tender BOQ guide walks through the hardware lines, and the library RFID system guide covers the workflow.

Fitting labels to books

  • Inside the back cover is the usual place for a 50 × 50 or 80 × 50 mm HF label: it is hidden, protected and consistent for the staff pad.
  • The spine takes the narrow UHF strips (125 × 7 mm, 95 × 3 mm) so a handheld reads the whole shelf face-on.
  • Metallic or foil covers detune a label; place it on a paper page inside the cover instead.
  • Vary the position slightly on thin journals so stacked HF labels do not sit exactly on top of each other.
  • Other 13.56 MHz labels are under HF labels and inlays; other UHF labels under UHF labels and inlays.

Frequently asked questions

Which RFID standard do library systems use?
Most library software, staff pads, self-check kiosks and gates use ISO 15693 at 13.56 MHz, which the ICODE SLIX and SLIX2 labels follow. UHF (EPC Gen2) labels are used where the aim is shelf audits and searches with a handheld, or in a new installation built on UHF readers.
Can the labels be printed with the library name?
Yes. The ICODE SLIX2 labels are printed with the UID, a serial or accession number, a barcode, a QR code or a logo. Send the artwork and numbering scheme with the enquiry.
How many labels per minimum order?
The minimum order for library labels is 500 pcs; the SLIX2 labels are supplied on rolls with a 3-inch core.
Do you supply the gate and the self-check kiosk?
Exit gates are listed under RFID gate readers. Self-check kiosks and the library software are part of the library management solution and are quoted per project.
Can one label carry a barcode too?
Yes. The ICODE SLIX2 labels can be printed with the accession barcode or a QR code next to the RFID inlay, so the existing barcode scanners keep working during the changeover. The UHF paper book tag is printed and encoded in a UHF label printer.
