Choosing NFC tags for phone taps and access
NFC tags work at 13.56 MHz and are read at tap distance, usually a few centimetres. A tag with an NTAG chip carries an NDEF record, such as a website, a Google review page or a contact card, that NFC-enabled Android phones and recent iPhones open without a separate reader. For most buyers the format matters more than the chip: will the tag hang on a keychain, sit inside a product, go on a pet collar or be stuck on a carton?
Types of NFC tag in this range
Epoxy and pet tags
The NFC Epoxy Tag IDNE30 is a 30 mm round PVC and epoxy tag with NTAG213, 215 or 216; the Mobile NFC Epoxy Tag EC025 hangs from a phone or keychain on a string. The NFC Pet ID Tag PETID, in PVC or PET, goes on a collar; microchips and ear tags are in animal and pet RFID tags.
Mini tags
For small objects: the 12 × 8.5 mm NFC Sticker ID-NFC-213-12 and the Small HF RFID Tag 30 × 15 mm. The 10 mm NFC Coin Tag ID-NFC-213-10 and the NTAG213 Wet Inlay ID-N213 on rolls for label converters sit with the flat NFC media in NFC tags, stickers and labels.
Keyfobs and coin tags
Rugged carriers for daily handling: the RFID Keyfob RKT is an IP67 ABS fob in LF, HF (MIFARE Classic 1K) or UHF; the PVC RFID Coin Tag is 25 or 30 mm, IP67, with NTAG213, MIFARE Classic 1K, ICODE SLIX or an LF chip. More fobs and tokens are in RFID key fobs and tokens.
Premium NFC card
The NFC Metal Card ID-NFC-MCARD is a stainless steel business card with an NTAG213 or NTAG215 chip and laser engraving, for sharing contact details with one tap. PVC and matte black cards are in NFC business cards.
NTAG213, NTAG215 or NTAG216?
All three are NFC Forum Type 2 chips that phones read natively; they differ in user memory:

Most tap-to-open uses fit in NTAG213. MIFARE Classic 1K keyfobs and coin tags are meant for access control and attendance readers, and not every phone can read MIFARE Classic, so pick an NTAG chip wherever a phone is the reader.
Size, surface and read distance
Smaller antennas need a closer tap: the 10 mm coin tag reads at 0–2 cm, while the NTAG213 wet inlay reads up to about 10 cm. Epoxy tags, keyfobs and the IP67 coin tag stand up to daily handling; thin stickers and inlays suit packaging, print and products where they are protected. Standard NFC tags lose performance when stuck on metal, so use an HF anti-metal tag on metal surfaces.
Encoding, printing and what to order alongside
- Encoding: NTAG tags can be written with an NFC phone and a writing app. For volume, ask for your link to be encoded for you; the IDNE30 epoxy tag and the 12 × 8.5 mm sticker are offered with custom encoding.
- Printing: epoxy tags are offset-printed with your artwork, and the IDNE30 can also carry a printed UID; keyfobs take logo engraving or colour print.
- Locking: NTAG chips can be password-protected or permanently locked so the stored link cannot be changed.
- Desk reader: to read or write tags from a PC, add a 13.56 MHz USB reader from our HF RFID readers.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special reader or app to use these NFC tags?
Not to read them. NFC-enabled Android phones and recent iPhones open the link or contact stored on an NTAG tag when it is tapped. You need a writing app, or tags encoded for you, to put your link on the tag, and a 13.56 MHz desktop reader only if you want to issue tags from a PC.
Which chip should I choose: NTAG213, NTAG215 or NTAG216?
Choose by how much data you store. NTAG213 has 144 bytes, enough for a website, review or social link. NTAG215 (504 bytes) and NTAG216 (888 bytes) suit longer links or a full contact card. The 30 mm NFC Epoxy Tag IDNE30 is offered with all three.
Can you print our logo and encode our link?
Yes. Epoxy tags are offset-printed with your artwork, and the IDNE30 can also carry a printed UID; keyfobs take logo engraving or colour print; the steel NFC card is laser engraved. Send your artwork and the link with your quote request and we will confirm the options for the tag you choose.
Will an NFC tag work on a metal surface?
Standard NFC tags, stickers and inlays detune when placed directly on metal and may not read. Use an HF anti-metal tag, or keep a spacer between the tag and the metal, and test on the real surface before ordering in volume.
Can the tag be locked so nobody changes the link?
Yes. NTAG chips support password protection and a permanent lock. Once a tag is permanently locked its content cannot be rewritten, so lock it only after you have tested the final link.
