What BLE beacons and gateways do

A BLE beacon is a small battery-powered tag that broadcasts its ID over Bluetooth Low Energy at a set interval. Receivers that hear the broadcast report which tag is nearby and how strong its signal is, so a platform can show where assets and people are. Every beacon in this range supports iBeacon and Eddystone, is configured from the Identium Connect app (Android) and works in the licence-exempt 2.4 GHz band (2400–2483.5 MHz).

Phones can detect beacons directly, but continuous tracking needs fixed receivers: ID-BGW-02 gateways for signal-strength (RSSI) zoning and positioning, or ID-AOA-GW25 anchors for Bluetooth Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) positioning.

RSSI zones or Bluetooth AOA positioning

RSSI positioning estimates distance from received signal strength, calibrated for each site; AOA anchors measure the angle a tag's signal arrives from. Both use the same class of low-cost, long-battery tag; the difference is the receivers. RSSI runs on gateways and is typically accurate to about 10 m; AOA needs dedicated anchors and reaches under 1 m.

How a system fits together

  1. Tags. A beacon, asset tag or work card on each asset or person.
  2. Receivers. ID-BGW-02 gateways forward sightings over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G using UDP, TCP or MQTT; ID-AOA-GW25 anchors report angle data to the positioning server.
  3. Platform. Identium's RTLS and asset-management platform forwards events over MQTT, UDP or HTTP and connects to MES, ERP and asset systems through JSON interfaces.

How to choose a tag

  • Battery. Coin cells (CR2032, CR2450, CR2477) suit small tags, ER14250 lithium cells give the industrial beacons multi-year life and wearables use rechargeable Li-Po. Rated life depends on transmit power and broadcast interval.
  • Mounting. 3M adhesive, screw ears, lanyard, wristband, ear-tag applicator or road-stud glue.
  • Environment. Several beacons are IP68 and rated −40 °C to +85 °C; the T08 pallet beacon adds IK08 shock protection.
  • Location detail. Zone presence works with any beacon and gateways; sub-metre positions need anchors and an AOA-capable tag: the ID-BLE-L01, B22, A07, A20, S25, C08 or X11.

BLE, active RFID or passive UHF?

BLE uses standard formats that phones can read, offers an upgrade path to sub-metre AOA, and reaches beyond the building with outdoor metal gateways and the R09 road stud. 2.4 GHz active RFID is a proprietary system whose tags work with matched readers; read ranges are quoted up to 400 m in open air on the AT507 tag and F529 reader.

For items counted at dock doors, gates or with handhelds, passive UHF RFID tags (865–868 MHz in India) need no battery and cost far less per tag; our UHF vs active RFID comparison covers the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BLE RSSI and Bluetooth AOA positioning?
RSSI positioning estimates distance from signal strength picked up by gateways. It is typically accurate to about 10 m, or 2–5 m in Identium's asset-positioning layout with 6–8 m beacon spacing. AOA anchors measure the angle a tag's signal arrives from; the ID-AOA-GW25 is rated for 0.1–1 m accuracy with AOA-capable tags.
Can I start with RSSI and add AOA later?
Yes, if the tags are AOA-capable. They also work in plain RSSI mode, so you can pilot with ID-BGW-02 gateways and later add ID-AOA-GW25 anchors in the zones that need sub-metre positions, without re-tagging. Other tags stay in RSSI mode, so choose AOA-capable models from the start for anything you may want to locate precisely.
Can a smartphone read these beacons?
Yes. The beacons broadcast in iBeacon and Eddystone formats, which phones with a compatible app can detect. Settings are changed from Identium's Android configuration app (Identium Connect). For continuous, hands-free tracking, use fixed gateways or AOA anchors.
Can the tags report temperature or movement as well as location?
Some can. The ID-BLE-L01-T adds a temperature and humidity sensor, many asset tags and wearables have an accelerometer version or option, and the E59 ear tag reports livestock ear-surface temperature with optional step counting. Sensor data travels through the same gateways as location data.
