Overview

A BLE temperature ear tag for cattle and sheep

The ID-BLE-E59 is an active livestock ear tag: it carries its own battery and a temperature sensor, and broadcasts its readings over Bluetooth Low Energy instead of waiting to be scanned at a gate. It measures the ear-surface temperature of cattle and sheep and, where step counting is ordered, how active each animal is. Readings reach a receiver up to 70 m away in open line of sight.

How the readings reach you

  1. Tag. Fitted with a standard ear-tag applicator, it broadcasts iBeacon and Eddystone frames on the licence-exempt 2.4 GHz band, with intervals set in the Identium Connect mobile app.
  2. Gateway. ID-BGW-02 gateways collect the broadcasts; an outdoor metal-case version with 4G backhaul (ID-BGW-02-MC) is available where there is no wired network.
  3. Platform. The gateway forwards data over MQTT, UDP or TCP to your herd software or Identium's RTLS/asset-management platform.

Battery and marking

A wide-temperature CR2032 cell lasts about 2.35 years (acceleration and temperature every 60 s, broadcast every 10 s, 25 °C). The IP68 tag carries a laser-marked serial number and QR code for identification by eye or phone camera.

Temperature tag or passive ear tag?

Ear-surface temperature moves with weather and housing as well as with the animal, so it works best as a trend for each animal, checked with a vet, not taken as a clinical reading. If you only need identification at gates and weighbridges, a passive UHF RFID animal ear tag needs no battery. Our guide to RFID livestock ear tags in India compares LF and UHF tags and the readers for each.

Typical applications

  • Dairy herd monitoring
  • Cattle temperature trends
  • Sheep flock monitoring
  • Livestock activity tracking

Frequently asked questions

Does it measure core body temperature?
No. It measures ear-surface temperature, which is also influenced by weather and housing. Use it to spot changes against each animal's own trend, and confirm with a vet.
What do I need to receive the data?
ID-BGW-02 BLE gateways within range of the herd (the tag reaches 70 m in open line of sight) and a network link for the gateway — Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G. Gateways forward the data over UDP, TCP or MQTT to your software or to Identium's RTLS/asset-management platform.
How long does the battery last?
About 2.35 years on its wide-temperature CR2032 cell, with acceleration and temperature every 60 s and a broadcast every 10 s, at 25 °C. Shorter intervals reduce it.
How is the tag fitted and identified?
With a standard ear-tag applicator. The face is laser-marked with a serial number and a QR code, so each animal can also be identified visually or with a phone camera.
Is step counting included?
Step counting is optional. Tell us whether you need it when you ask for a quote.
