Overview

What the ID-BGW-02 BLE gateway does

The ID-BGW-02 is the receiver in a Bluetooth tracking system. It listens for BLE beacons, work cards, wristbands and sensors around it and forwards what it hears to your server. A built-in power amplifier (PA) and low-noise amplifier (LNA) extend coverage, so a site needs fewer gateways, and one gateway can scan more than 300 devices per second. The rated scanning distance is more than 100 m, but the actual read distance is set by the beacon's own rating (70 m or 100 m in open space for Identium tags) and is shorter through walls and racking.

How a BLE gateway system works

  1. Install the gateway. Mount it to suit the site and power it by PoE or a DC adapter.
  2. Tag what you track. Fix a BLE beacon to each asset or tool, or give staff a wearable or work card.
  3. Collect. Broadcasts the gateway picks up (after any name, RSSI or MAC filters) are uploaded by UDP, TCP or MQTT, in JSON or HEX.
  4. Act. Your platform parses the data for location, alerts and asset records, and can send commands back to connected devices.

Location comes from signal strength: comparing the RSSI of one tag at several gateways lets the server estimate distance and triangulate it to zone level, roughly 10 m. Where you need sub-metre positions, add ID-AOA-GW25 AOA anchors; the AOA-capable tags work with both.

Indoor or outdoor, Wi-Fi or 4G

VersionHousingBackhaul
ID-BGW-02-PIndoor, ABS + PC, Ø 124 × 40 mmWi-Fi
ID-BGW-02-PCIndoor, ABS + PC, Ø 124 × 40 mm4G
ID-BGW-02-MOutdoor, metal, 153 × 137 × 97 mmWi-Fi

Every version also has a WAN / LAN network port that takes PoE. Choose a 4G version where there is no wired network or Wi-Fi, such as yards, sheds or temporary sites.

Integration and management

Because the gateway speaks UDP, TCP and MQTT, it can report to your own server, a cloud MQTT broker or Identium's RTLS and asset-management platform. Filters by device name, RSSI or MAC address keep unwanted Bluetooth traffic off the network, and firmware and settings can be upgraded remotely. An SDK, demo software and a debugging and packet-analysis tool are available for integrators.

What it reads

The gateway reads Identium BLE beacons and asset tags and wearables and work cards, as well as other Bluetooth devices such as wristbands, door locks and sensors. Up to 20 devices can be connected at once for two-way data and remote control.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the ID-BGW-02 work in the licence-exempt 2.4 GHz band (2400–2483.5 MHz).

Typical applications

  • Hospital asset tracking
  • Elderly care monitoring
  • Warehouse asset tracking
  • Factory tool management
  • Staff attendance check-in
  • Sensor data collection
  • Indoor zone positioning
  • Retail indoor positioning

Frequently asked questions

How many beacons can one gateway handle?
It scans more than 300 Bluetooth devices per second, caches up to 5000 devices per cycle and holds up to 20 simultaneous connections. How many gateways a site needs depends on its layout and on the beacons: the gateway's rated scanning distance is more than 100 m, but the actual read distance is set by each beacon's own rating (70 m or 100 m in open space for Identium tags) and is shorter through walls and racking.
Which version should I order?
ID-BGW-02-P (indoor) or ID-BGW-02-M (outdoor metal case) for Wi-Fi backhaul; ID-BGW-02-PC (indoor) or ID-BGW-02-MC (outdoor) where you need 4G. All versions have a network port that also takes PoE.
Can the gateway give the exact position of a tag?
With several ID-BGW-02 gateways, the server estimates a tag's position from signal strength (RSSI): zone-level, around 10 m. A single gateway only tells you a tag is in range. For sub-metre positions, add ID-AOA-GW25 AOA anchors and use AOA-capable tags: ID-BLE-L01, B22, A07, A20, S25, C08 or X11.
How does the data reach my software?
The gateway sends what it receives by UDP, TCP or MQTT, in JSON or HEX format, to your server, a cloud broker or Identium's RTLS platform. You can filter by device name, RSSI or MAC address, and an SDK and demo software are available.
How is it powered?
By PoE (48 V, IEEE 802.3at) or a DC supply from 6 to 28 V. The adapter is 12 V / 1 A for indoor versions and 12 V / 2 A for outdoor versions. Current draw is 180 mA at 12 V, or 280 mA with the 4G module.
