RFID Hardware for Bin and Waste Collection Tracking

Door-to-door and bulk waste collection is hard to verify. A ward has household, shop and community bins spread over many streets, rounds start before dawn, and supervisors often depend on a driver's word or a photo to know which bins were really emptied.

RFID turns each pickup into a record. A passive UHF tag on the bin is read by a reader on the vehicle or in a collector's hand, and the time and vehicle are logged against that bin. This page covers the tags and readers stocked in the store; the collection dashboard and reporting software is on IdentiumOne.

How it works

  1. 1

    Tag and register bins

Fix a UHF bin tag to each plastic bin, or an on-metal tag to steel containers, then register the tag against the household, shop or site address with a handheld.

  2. 2

    Read at every pickup

A rugged UHF tablet or reader on the collection vehicle reads the tag as the bin is emptied and logs the bin ID with the time.

  3. 3

    Check vehicles at the depot

A 4G integrated reader at the depot gate or weighbridge identifies each vehicle as it arrives, so loads can be tied to the routes they came from, even with no wired network on site.

  4. 4

    Follow up missed bins

The software compares the reads with the planned route and lists bins that were not collected, so supervisors know exactly where to send a vehicle back.

Hardware you need

Plastic bins

The RFID waste management tag is a 10 g ABS tag for fixed installation on bins, rated from -20 °C to +85 °C. Order the UHF version so it reads on the vehicle and handheld readers listed here.

Steel bins and skips

Metal containers need an on-metal tag. The Encore fixes with screws, rivets or adhesive, and the 100 x 30 mm UMLT is a long-range on-metal tag in a slimmer 6 mm profile for large dumpsters.

All On Metal RFID Tags

Handles and bulk waste bags

A UHF cable tie tag (IP67, -40 °C to +120 °C) loops through a handle or grille where there is no flat surface. Its one-way ratchet cannot be opened without cutting it.

On the collection vehicle

The CX806T UHF industrial tablet runs Android with 4G, so the crew can read bin tags at the kerb and send the log from the road.

All RFID Handheld Readers

Depot gate and weighbridge

The 4G-enabled IF9A integrated reader pushes reads to a cloud server over its own SIM, and a thin UHF windscreen tag on each vehicle identifies it at the gate.

Field audits

The CX1500N handheld is used to register new bins, check a street after the round and confirm complaints on the spot.

The software

Reading a tag is only the first step. Route plans, missed-bin lists, segregation checks, weight-based billing where weighing is fitted, and ward-level reports are handled by the RFID Waste Management System from IdentiumOne, which takes in the reads from these bin tags and vehicle readers. Why teams use it

  • Proof of collection for each bin, recorded by a reader instead of reported by hand.
  • Missed bins and skipped streets show up while the route is still fresh.
  • Tags made for outdoor plastic bins and steel containers, so one system covers homes, markets and bulk generators.
  • Vehicles are identified at the depot gate, linking each load to its route.

Frequently asked questions

Which tag goes on a plastic bin and which on a metal one?

Plastic wheelie bins and household bins take the ABS waste management tag in its UHF version. Steel bins, skips and dumpsters should get an on-metal tag, for example the Encore or the larger UMLT, because standard tags lose range when fixed to metal.

Do I need a wired network at the depot for the reader?

No. The 4G-enabled IF9A has a micro SIM slot and pushes reads to a cloud server over mobile data, so a depot or weighbridge without wired internet can still act as a read point.

Which reader should go on the collection vehicle?

A UHF industrial tablet such as the CX806T is a practical starting point, because its 4G link lets the crew send logs from the road. A fixed integrated reader can be mounted near the bin lifter for automatic reads, but test the mounting on your own vehicle before a rollout.

Can I buy a small quantity of bin tags to test?

The minimum order for bin tags is 500 pieces, which suits a pilot on a few streets or in one housing society. For a smaller sample before ordering, use the Request RFID Samples page.
