RFID Ear Tags, Microchips and Readers for Livestock

Herd records are only as reliable as the link between an animal and its file. An RFID ear tag or implanted microchip gives each animal a number a reader can capture in the pen, at milking or on the weighing scale, so treatments, breeding and yield are logged against the right cow, buffalo, sheep or goat.

Different farms need different frequencies. This page groups the UHF ear tags, 134.2 kHz FDX-B microchips and BLE sensor ear tags we sell with the reader that matches each, and links to IdentiumOne for the farm software.

How it works

  1. 1

    Choose the ID method

Pick UHF ear tags for quick reads at short distance, FDX-B microchips for permanent ID, or BLE ear tags if you also want temperature and activity data.

  2. 2

    Tag and register

Fit the ear tag, or have a vet implant the microchip, and register the number against the animal's details.

  3. 3

    Read during routine work

Scan animals with the matching reader in pens, at milking or at weighing, so each routine visit adds to the record.

  4. 4

    Keep records in one place

The farm software stores breeding, vaccination, health and yield entries against each tag number.

Hardware you need

UHF ear tags and handheld

The UHF animal ear tag is made for India's 865–868 MHz band, is IP67 rated and reads at 1–3 m. Pair it with a UHF handheld such as the CX1500N for pen checks and weighing.

All UHF RFID Tags

FDX-B microchips and LF reader

The IDTS-AMC134 is a 134.2 kHz FDX-B microchip (ISO 11784/11785) supplied pre-loaded in a syringe; a vet implants it to give the animal a permanent number. Read it with the RA91 handheld, which handles FDX-B and other LF animal tags but not UHF or HF tags.

All LF RFID Tags

BLE sensor ear tags and gateway

The ID-BLE-E59 ear tag reports ear-surface temperature, with optional step counting, for cattle and sheep. A BLE gateway such as the ID-BGW-02 collects those readings over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G.

Fixed read point at a race or scale

Where animals walk through a race or onto a scale one by one, an IF9A integrated UHF reader mounted beside the walkway can log UHF ear tags without a handheld. The ear tag's rated range is short, so mount it close and test the position on site.

The software

A reader captures a number; the IdentiumOne livestock platform turns that number into a herd record. It keeps a master file for each animal with breeding, vaccination, health and milk-yield entries, lets staff add a treatment or note from a phone after scanning the tag, and holds a per-animal electronic ID history that can support traceability records. Visit IdentiumOne to see the herd features and book a demo.

Why teams use it

  • Each animal's records tied to a number a reader can capture
  • Choose UHF, LF microchip or BLE to suit how you handle the herd
  • Temperature and activity data from BLE ear tags without handling the animal
  • Less re-keying of animal numbers into paper registers
  • Matched tag and reader pairs listed for each frequency

Frequently asked questions

Which reader do I need for an FDX-B microchip?

An LF reader that supports 134.2 kHz FDX-B, such as the RA91. UHF handhelds will not read microchips and the RA91 will not read UHF ear tags, so buy the reader that matches your tag.

Should I choose UHF ear tags or microchips?

Ear tags are visible and quick to read at short range with a UHF handheld. Microchips are implanted by a vet and stay in place long term, but need an LF reader held close. You can also use both: an ear tag for daily work and a chip for permanent ID.

Can I monitor animal temperature remotely?

The ID-BLE-E59 ear tag broadcasts temperature over Bluetooth, and a BLE gateway within range passes it on to the farm software. Place gateways around sheds, milking areas or water points where animals spend time.

Where do I get the herd management software?

Ear tags, microchips and readers are bought here. The livestock software, its mobile app and set-up are offered through IdentiumOne.
