RFID solutions using RFID Vehicle Tags & Windshield Stickers

How RFID windshield tags work at a parking gate

Each registered vehicle gets a UHF RFID sticker fixed on the inside of the windscreen. A long-range UHF reader on a pole facing the lane reads the tag through the glass as the vehicle approaches and passes its number to your access or parking software, which decides whether to lift the boom barrier. The driver does not stop or hold a card out of the window, and every entry is logged against the vehicle.

The tags in this range list read ranges from 1–4 m to over 8–10 m, depending on the format, the reader and the glass. Those that state a frequency are rated for India's 865–868 MHz UHF band, or respond across 860–960 MHz, which covers it.

Choosing a windshield tag

Tamper-proof, one tag per vehicle

The IDTS-UWTP printed windshield tag and the IDTS-UTWTH3 tamper-proof windshield label are tamper-proof, for gates that work on one tag per vehicle: the IDTS-UTWTH3 cannot be peeled off and refitted intact. Both read at over 8–10 m from inside the windshield and carry a printed serial number and matching barcode for the issue desk.

Printed passes guards can check

The full-colour printed windshield label (110 × 40 mm) takes your vehicle number, colour code, department, logo, serial number and barcode on its face, so a guard can check the pass by eye. Its tamper-evident adhesive shows visible damage if someone tries to remove it; it is IP65 rated and reads at 1–5 m at gate lanes. The IDTS-UWTP can also be printed with your logo.

Car stickers for staff and fleet parking

The ID-1770-U8 (U8 chip), 2294-U9 (NXP UCODE 9), ID-9654 (Alien H9) and ID-1993-H9 (H9) are thin, flexible stickers for the inside of the windscreen, read at up to 6 m and priced at ₹6–₹8 + GST each. None of the four is listed as tamper-proof, so where a pass must not move between vehicles, choose one of the tamper-proof tags.

Tags for two-wheelers

Motorcycles and scooters need a tag made for a fairing or visor rather than a car windscreen. The 2-wheeler RFID tag is a thin, flexible 110 × 40 mm UHF sticker for the headlight fairing or visor, IP66 rated, working from −30 °C to +85 °C and read at 1–4 m at parking and gate lanes. Mount the lane antenna at headlight height and keep the lane narrow for consistent reads.

Not a FASTag

These are not toll FASTag tags. FASTags are issued through banks for national highway toll payment and FASTag parking payments. The tags in this category are read by your own gate reader and registered in your own access or parking software; toll plazas will not accept them. To take FASTag payments at a car park, read our FASTag parking guide for operators.

Fitting and the gate lane

  • Placement. Fix the tag on the inside of clean, dry glass, high up and usually behind the rear-view mirror, facing the lane antenna.
  • Glass to avoid. Metallised sun-control film, heat-reflective coatings, heated-glass elements and the ceramic dot border can reduce or block UHF reads. Test a few vehicles, including your tallest and lowest, before issuing tags to everyone.
  • Reader. A long-range UHF reader set to the 865–868 MHz band, usually an integrated reader with a built-in antenna on a pole facing incoming traffic, wired to the boom-barrier controller or your access software.
  • Numbering. Scan the printed barcode at the issue desk to link a tag to a flat number, employee ID or vehicle number, or ask for tags pre-encoded with your number series when you request a quote.

For the whole lane, from tags and readers to antennas and parking software, see the RFID vehicle and parking management system. Our guide to vehicle RFID tags in India covers boom-barrier set-up and what drives the cost.

Ordering windshield tags

Prices are per tag plus GST, with a minimum order of 500 pcs per model. Add the tags you need to your quote list with your vehicle count and number series, or request samples to test on your own vehicles and gate first.

Frequently asked questions

Are these the same as FASTag?
No. FASTags are issued through banks for highway toll payment and FASTag parking payments. These tags are for gates and car parks you run: your own UHF reader reads the tag, and your access or parking software decides whether to open the barrier. Toll plazas will not accept them.
Which windshield tag should I choose?
Where a pass must stay with one vehicle, for example paid or monthly passes, choose a tamper-proof tag: the IDTS-UTWTH3 or the IDTS-UWTP, both read at over 8–10 m from inside the windshield. For a colour-coded pass a guard can check by eye, the full-colour printed label reads at 1–5 m. For staff and fleet parking, the ID-1770-U8, 2294-U9, ID-9654 and ID-1993-H9 stickers read at up to 6 m.
Where on the windscreen should the tag go?
On the inside of the glass, high up and usually behind the rear-view mirror, facing the lane antenna. Keep it off the ceramic dot border, tint bands and metallised sun-control or heat-reflective film, which can reduce or block UHF reads, and test a few vehicles before issuing tags to everyone.
Which reader do I need at the gate?
A long-range UHF RFID reader set to India's 865–868 MHz band, usually an integrated reader with a built-in antenna on a pole facing incoming traffic, wired to the boom-barrier controller or your access software. The reader sends the tag number and your software decides whether to open the barrier.
Is there a tag for motorcycles and scooters?
Yes. The 2-wheeler RFID tag is a thin, flexible 110 × 40 mm sticker for the headlight fairing or visor, IP66 rated and read at 1–4 m. Like the car tags, the minimum order is 500 pcs.
