RFID full form, meaning and RFID क्या है: a plain-language guide
RFID full form: Radio Frequency Identification (रेडियो फ्रीक्वेंसी आइडेंटिफिकेशन)
The full form of RFID is Radio Frequency Identification. It is a way of identifying an object, an animal or a person with radio waves, instead of a printed barcode that someone has to point a scanner at. The US standards body NIST describes RFID as a form of automatic identification and data capture that uses electric or magnetic fields at radio frequencies to transmit information. Each item carries a small RFID tag with a unique identifier, and a device called an RFID reader communicates with the tag wirelessly, without optical line of sight and over greater distances than other automatic-identification methods.
Each word of the name does a job. Radio is the carrier: the reader and the tag talk by radio, not by light. Frequency is the band they talk on, such as 125 kHz, 13.56 MHz or, in India, 865–868 MHz, and a tag answers only a reader on its own band. Identification is the purpose: every tag holds a number, and software looks that number up. The term is a formal one. The international air-interface standards are published as ISO/IEC 18000, "Information technology: Radio frequency identification for item management"; part 3 covers 13.56 MHz and part 63 covers 860 to 960 MHz.
In practice an RFID system has three parts. A tag is a chip plus an antenna, packaged as a card, a sticker, a wristband or a hard plastic case. A reader sends out radio energy and listens for the tag's reply. Software turns the tag's number into something useful: a student's name, a library book, a patient, a carton or a vehicle. If you remember one thing, remember that the tag and the reader must work on the same frequency; the types are explained further down this page.
RFID card kya hota hai: card, chip and reader
An RFID card is a plastic card, usually the same size as a bank card, with a tiny chip and a coil antenna laminated inside. It has no battery. When the card comes near a reader, the reader's radio field powers the chip, and the chip answers with its number. An office attendance card, a college library card, a hotel room key and a metro smart card all work this way; what differs is the chip inside and the frequency it works on. Many ID and access cards use 13.56 MHz (HF) chips, while simpler 125 kHz (LF) cards are common in basic attendance machines.
We make and supply RFID cards in bulk: plain HF cards from ₹10 + GST, printed ID cards with a photo and school or company branding from ₹30 + GST, and 125 kHz cards from ₹10 + GST. The minimum order for cards is 500 pcs, and the RFID cards buyer guide explains which chip suits which reader. The reader is the other half: browse RFID readers by band.
RFID full form in school: attendance, library and bus
The full form does not change inside a school: it is still Radio Frequency Identification. What people searching "RFID full form in school" usually want to know is what the card does. A student's RFID ID card is tapped at the gate reader for attendance, read at the library counter to issue a book, and read at the bus door so that the school's software can tell parents when the child boards. The same card can open a locker or a laboratory door when the lock reads the same chip. Our RFID for schools and colleges page lists the cards, readers and labels for each of these jobs, and the attendance management guide explains the setup step by step.
RFID full form in railway: wagon tags and Kavach track tags
Indian Railways uses RFID in two different places. The first is on the rolling stock: each wagon, coach and locomotive carries a rugged passive UHF tag, riveted to the vehicle and read by fixed readers at yards and depots, so a train identifies itself as it passes. Our Indian Railways RFID tags guide covers the tag types, the encoding and the tenders. The second is on the track itself. The Kavach automatic train protection system relies on RFID-based track identification: when Central Railway commissioned Kavach on the Solapur–Wadi section in July 2026, reporting on the project said 1,234 RFID tags had been installed and programmed along the route.
RFID full form in hospital: patient wristbands
In a hospital the RFID tag is usually a wristband. The band carries the patient's ID; a nurse's reader or a reader at a ward door reads it to confirm the right patient before medication, to log a transfer, or to match a newborn with the mother. UHF wristbands can be read from a distance for ward-level tracking, while HF/NFC bands are read by a tap. We supply hospital and patient RFID wristbands for adults and infants from ₹25–₹28 + GST; see also the wider RFID wristbands range and our RFID for hospitals page.
RFID in FASTag and in Vaishno Devi yatra cards
The FASTag sticker on a car's windshield is an RFID tag. The government's Digital India portal describes FASTag as an RFID passive tag used for making toll payments, affixed to the windshield of the vehicle; the reader on the toll gantry reads it while the vehicle keeps moving. The same kind of windshield tag is used for housing-society gates, parking and factory vehicle entry: see our RFID vehicle tags and windshield stickers and the FASTag and vehicle RFID guide. We do not sell FASTags themselves.
"RFID card full form Vaishno Devi" is a common search because the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board issues pilgrims an RFID card, which a December 2025 report on the Board's registration guidelines calls the RFID Yatra Access Card. The full form on that card is the same: Radio Frequency Identification. Our pilgrim tracking guide looks at how shrine boards and mela administrations use RFID cards and wristbands.
NFC tag meaning in Hindi: the RFID your phone can read
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. IEEE's technology overview describes it as operating at 13.56 MHz, in the unlicensed ISM band, between devices no more than about four centimetres apart, and calls it a close relative of RFID that shares the same carrier frequency and inductive coupling. An NFC tag is a 13.56 MHz tag built to a format that smartphones understand, which is why a phone with NFC can read a review card, a business card or a product label with a tap. A phone cannot read a UHF warehouse label or a 125 kHz attendance card, so not every RFID tag works with a phone.
The NFC vs RFID guide goes deeper; our NFC tags and labels and NFC cards (from ₹20 + GST) cover the usual formats, and the NFC tag price guide shows how to program one.
RFID ke prakar: LF, HF and UHF
RFID tags are grouped by the radio frequency they use, and each band gives a different read range. NIST lists the common low-frequency RFID frequencies as 125 or 134 kHz and the high-frequency one as 13.56 MHz, and notes that UHF systems are typically designed for a longer operating range than LF and HF systems. The international air-interface standard for passive UHF RFID, ISO/IEC 18000-63, covers 860 to 960 MHz; India uses the 865–868 MHz part of that range. The read ranges below are typical figures from our own product pages, not limits.
| Type | Frequency | Typical read range | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| LF (low frequency) | 125 kHz (134.2 kHz for animal tags) | A few centimetres; our LF desktop reader lists 5–8 cm | Basic attendance cards, key fobs, animal tags |
| HF (high frequency), including NFC | 13.56 MHz | Up to about 10 cm by tap; up to about 1 m for ISO 15693 labels with a long-range reader | ID cards, library labels, NFC tags and cards |
| UHF (ultra-high frequency) | 865–868 MHz in India | Several metres; up to 25 m effective with our IF9A fixed reader and a suitable tag | Warehouse labels, vehicle tags, on-metal asset tags, railway wagons |
India's UHF RFID band is 865–868 MHz. It is licence-exempt under G.S.R. 853(E) of 10 December 2021, the Use of Low Power Equipment in the Frequency Band 865-868 MHz for Short Range Devices (Exemption from Licence) Rules, 2021, which allow RFID interrogators up to 2 W e.r.p. on four channels centred at 865.7, 866.3, 866.9 and 867.5 MHz. The same rules require the equipment to be type approved. The frequency comparison guide helps you pick a band, and the WPC ETA checklist for RFID readers covers the paperwork a reader needs. Browse RFID readers and RFID tags by frequency.
RFID vs barcode: the one-line difference
A barcode is printed and must be seen: someone points a scanner at one label at a time. An RFID tag is read by radio: the reader does not need to see it, and a UHF reader can read many tags in one pass, through a carton or a bag. That is why RFID is used where counting speed matters, such as warehouse stock checks, library stock-taking and race timing, and why barcodes stay where cost per label matters most. Many labels carry both. Our RFID vs barcode comparison and the how RFID works guide explain the trade-off in detail, and the RFID FAQ answers the other common questions.
