IDOS: Identium's Own Android 15 OS for UHF RFID Handhelds

Many Android RFID handhelds leave the factory with a general-purpose phone image that includes Google apps and Google Play services. IDOS is Identium's own operating system, built on open-source Android 15, and it is what the CX1500N and CX1000 ship with.

This page lists those two handhelds, the long-range CX1500N and the cost-effective CX1000, and an evaluation kit for each. On both, IDOS also adds tools of its own: background RFID reads posted to your server, programmable buttons and a barcode scanner app.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pick the handheld

Choose the CX1500N for reads up to 25 m across warehouses and high racking, or the CX1000 for indoor counts up to 6 m. Both ship with IDOS.

  2. 2

    Switch it on

IDOS is already installed and there is no Google account to set up. Insert a SIM for 4G (the CX1500N also has Wi-Fi) and the handheld is ready for your app.

  3. 3

    Send reads to your system

Count, export or post reads to your URL with CX Flow Pro, build your own app on the free SDK, or turn on Auto RFID to post tag reads to your webhook from any screen.

  4. 4

    Add your brand (bulk orders)

On bulk and OEM orders of the CX1500N, IDOS is rebuilt with your boot logo, boot animation and model name, so your brand shows from the first screen.

Long-range handheld with IDOS

The CX1500N reads ISO 18000-6C/6B and EPC Gen2 tags at 0–25 m, with transmit power adjustable up to 33 dBm, and adds a 1D/2D barcode imager, cameras, 4G, GPS and Wi-Fi. Every unit ships with IDOS and CX Flow Pro.

Indoor handheld with IDOS

The CX1000 is the cost-effective option for shops, stockrooms and offices. It reads UHF tags at up to 6 m, connects over 4G and runs IDOS on an MTK octa-core 2.0 GHz processor.

Evaluation kits

Each kit pairs one of these handhelds with a mix of UHF sample labels and tags and the free CX Flow Pro app, so you can trial counts on your own stock before ordering more units.

The software

IDOS is built on open-source Android 15, without Google apps or Google Play services, and your tag reads, scans and inventory records go only to the apps and servers you choose. On both handhelds it also adds Identium tools. Auto RFID reads tags in the background, even with the screen off, and posts them to your webhook, holding them if the network drops. Action buttons map the side buttons (and the CX1500N's gun-grip trigger) to actions such as the CX Flow Pro trigger or opening an app. CX Code Scanner collects barcodes and QR codes into sessions with Excel export. CX Code Scanner and CX Triggers tiles sit in the quick-settings shade, with an Auto RFID tile you can add. The trade-off: apps that rely on Google Play services, such as Google Maps, need an alternative, and if you manage handhelds with an MDM, check with us that it supports Android devices without Google Play services.

Why teams use it

  • No Google apps or Google Play services; tag reads and inventory records go only where you send them
  • No Google account to set up before a handheld goes into service
  • Background RFID posts tags to your webhook from any screen and holds them if the network drops
  • The side buttons run the actions your team chooses
  • Bulk and OEM CX1500N orders carry your brand from the boot screen onwards

Frequently asked questions

Which handhelds run IDOS?

The CX1500N and the CX1000 UHF RFID handhelds ship with IDOS, Identium's own operating system built on Android 15. Both include Auto RFID, Action buttons and CX Code Scanner.

Does IDOS share our data with third parties?

No. IDOS has no Google apps or Google Play services, and your tag reads, scans and inventory data are not shared with third parties: they go only to the apps and servers you choose. One note: camera scanning in CX Code Scanner uses Google's ML Kit library, which can send usage statistics to Google; on the CX1500N, scans with the barcode imager don't use it.

Can we run our own app on IDOS?

Yes. Both handhelds come with a free SDK and a demonstration application, and IDOS is based on Android 15, so your developers can use standard Android tools. Apps that rely on Google Play services, such as Google Maps or Firebase push messages, need an alternative.

Can IDOS carry our brand?

On bulk and OEM orders of the CX1500N, yes. IDOS is rebuilt from one brand profile with your boot logo, boot animation and model name, and your logo, wallpapers and colours are checked before the build. Ask for a branded build in your quotation request.
