RFID solutions using UWB Positioning (RTLS)
Buying guide
Ultra-wideband (UWB) measures the time a radio pulse takes to travel between a tag and fixed anchors, and turns those distances into a position. Because the pulses are nanoseconds long, the distance is precise and holds up near metal and in multipath-heavy spaces such as racked warehouses: the Identium UWB range is rated under 30 cm in unobstructed space, against under 1 m for Bluetooth AOA and about 10 m for Bluetooth RSSI zones. The anchors and tags are specified in the 6.24–6.74 GHz band (6.25–6.75 GHz on the R40 anchor), and are planned and sold as one system.
ID-UWB-B50 battery anchors, 3–5 years per battery, with the ID-UWB-V10 4G terminal on each vehicle. Nothing to cable on the ceiling; the terminal uploads positions itself. The fastest way to track forklifts.
ID-UWB-P30 indoor anchors on PoE, or ID-UWB-R40 aluminium IP67 anchors, on Ethernet or 4G. Tags only need UWB: the C20 work card, W20 wristband and M18 magnetic tag.
The ID-UWB-X10 ranges to other vehicles and tagged pedestrians and switches relays for a beacon, horn or interlock at a distance you set.
| Job | Tag or terminal | Anchors |
|---|---|---|
| Track forklifts indoors and in the yard | ID-UWB-V10 (UWB + GNSS + 4G) | ID-UWB-B50 battery anchors |
| Locate staff, SOS, mustering | ID-UWB-C20 card or ID-UWB-W20 wristband | ID-UWB-P30 or R40 |
| Find trolleys, moulds, pallet trucks | ID-UWB-M18 magnetic tag | ID-UWB-P30 or R40 |
| Warn of people near vehicles | ID-UWB-X10 on the vehicle | None needed for ranging |
Racking height, aisle width and metal all change the count, so send a floor plan for a layout.
The UWB positioning platform does the position calculation and puts every tag on a live map, with history playback, geofences and alarms, SOS handling and equipment statistics, and an interface for your WMS or ERP. It is quoted with the hardware for each project; see the UWB forklift tracking system for a worked layout.
UWB costs more per tag and anchor than Bluetooth and draws more power, so use it where tens of centimetres matter: which aisle and slot, which side of a walkway. For room-level location, BLE beacons and gateways are cheaper; for counting items through doors, passive UHF RFID needs no battery at all. Our RFID vs BLE vs UWB vs GPS guide compares them.
