ReaderSense Edge Hardware: The Reader with Middleware on Board
A typical RFID site keeps a PC or server near the reader to run the middleware that filters reads and forwards them. ReaderSense Edge moves that work onto the reader’s own Linux computer, and ReaderSense MDM lets you look after a whole fleet of these readers from one cloud console.
In this store, Edge comes pre-installed on the ID-EA500 UHF ceiling array reader. This page lists that reader and the UHF tags that suit it. The software, its screens and the MDM console are covered on identiumone.com.
How it works
- 1
Mount and connect
Fix the ID-EA500 to the ceiling above the area to watch and run a single PoE cable for power and network.
- 2
Open the console in a browser
Edge serves its own interface from the reader, so setup, live inventory and diagnostics need nothing more than a browser on the same network.
- 3
Set zones and rules
Lay out the zones in the site designer, then add rules that react to tag events by switching outputs, sounding an alarm or calling a webhook.
- 4
Send events to your systems
Forward events to your WMS, ERP or dashboard over HTTP, WebSocket or MQTT. During a network outage, events wait on the reader and go out in order once the link is back.
- 5
Manage the fleet
Enrol readers in ReaderSense MDM to check their health, open a session on any unit, and push settings or firmware without opening inbound ports at the site.

The software
ReaderSense Edge is middleware that lives on the reader. It drives the RF module, stores reads locally, merges duplicates, and serves live inventory, zone presence, direction of travel, an asset registry, rules, alerts and diagnostics in the browser. It reports the zone a tag is in rather than claiming a precise floor position the radio cannot support. ReaderSense MDM is the optional hosted half: each reader dials out over an encrypted link, and one console shows every unit and lets an operator reach its interface remotely. For the module list, the demo video and the stated limits of zone tracking, see ReaderSense Edge + MDM on IdentiumOne.
ReaderSense Edge on-reader RFID middleware and MDM fleet console on IdentiumOneWhy teams use it
- No PC or server to maintain on site; the reader filters and forwards its own reads.
- Reads keep being captured and queued through a network outage.
- Events go directly to your own systems, without passing through an Identium cloud account.
- One console for a whole fleet, reached over outbound connections only.
- Zone results are reported plainly, without promising precision the radio cannot give.

Frequently asked questions
Which reader in the store runs ReaderSense Edge?
The ID-EA500 UHF ceiling array reader ships with Linux and ReaderSense Edge pre-installed. The Edge licence is per unit and bound to that device.
Can Edge send data to my own software?
Yes. Events can go out over HTTP POST, WebSocket, MQTT with TLS or webhooks, and the reader can also talk Modbus RTU over RS485 to PLCs and barriers.
Do I need ReaderSense MDM?
No. MDM is optional. Each reader works on its own; MDM adds a hosted console for monitoring and managing many readers from one place.
Which tags should I use with the ID-EA500?
EPC Gen2 UHF tags made for the 865–868 MHz band. Choose on-metal tags for metal items, hard-case tags for equipment and printable labels for cartons, as listed on this page.
