Overview

A BLE beacon wristband for tracking people

The ID-BLE-W61 puts a Bluetooth Low Energy beacon into a black wristband, 38 × 11.2 × 243.9 mm and 40 g. A bracelet suits people for whom a lanyard badge does not work, such as hospital patients or workers whose badge would get in the way of the job.

It broadcasts iBeacon and Eddystone frames on the licence-exempt 2.4 GHz band (2400–2483.5 MHz), up to 100 m in open space, compared with 70 m for the W16 lanyard tag and the B50 button fob.

Reading the bracelet in wards and work areas

ID-BGW-02 BLE gateways in wards, corridors or work areas receive the bracelet's broadcasts and forward them over Ethernet, Wi-Fi or 4G. Signal strength (RSSI) across gateways places the wearer in a zone, typically to about 10 m, so tracking covers only the areas where gateways are installed. Phones with a BLE app pick it up as well. The W61 does not support AOA, so it is not used for sub-metre positioning.

Charging and protection

The 220 mAh Li-Po (3.7 V) is rechargeable, and its 3-year standby rating is quoted at 0 dBm with a 500 ms interval. Its power and interval are tuned in the Identium Connect mobile app. The band carries an IP66 rating and an operating range of −20 °C to +65 °C. An accelerometer is optional.

BLE bracelet or RFID wristband?

HF/NFC RFID wristbands are read when held at a reader, which suits door access, lockers or cashless payment; UHF wristbands are read at gates a few metres away. Neither reports where the wearer is between readers. The W61 broadcasts on its own, so gateways can follow the wearer wherever they are installed. If the wearer needs a call button, see the ID-BLE-B50 SOS beacon.

Typical applications

  • Hospital patient location
  • Site worker zoning
  • Sports and fitness venues
  • Visitor tracking
  • Patrol check-in

Frequently asked questions

Can it be used to track patients or residents?
It can be worn by patients or residents; it is specified as a wrist-worn personnel tag. ID-BGW-02 gateways in wards or corridors report which zone the wearer is in, to about 10 m, but only where gateways are installed. How alerts are raised, for example when someone leaves an area, is set in your tracking software.
Is it waterproof?
It is rated IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. IP66 does not cover immersion, so it should not be worn for swimming or bathing.
Does the W61 support sub-metre AOA positioning?
No. It is tracked by RSSI with ID-BGW-02 gateways. For sub-metre positions with ID-AOA-GW25 anchors, use an AOA-capable wearable such as the ID-BLE-S25 work card.
How long does the battery last?
The 220 mAh Li-Po is rechargeable and rated for 3 years of standby when set to 0 dBm with a 500 ms interval. Raising the transmit power or shortening the interval reduces this.
How is the W61 different from the W16?
The W61 is worn on the wrist, reaches up to 100 m in open space and is IP66. The ID-BLE-W16 is a 9 g round tag worn on a lanyard, with 70 m range in open space and an IP67 rating. Both are located by ID-BGW-02 gateways, and neither supports AOA.
