Overview

A miniature on-metal UHF RFID tag with an Impinj chip

The IDTS-0803 is a rigid black PCB bar, 8 mm by 3 mm, standing 4.3 mm tall at its raised boss. Where the 6 × 3 mm IDTS-0603 uses a U8 chip, this tag carries an Impinj Monza R6-P. That matters if your readers, middleware or encoding routines are already built around Impinj silicon, and it adds 32 bits of user memory alongside the 128-bit EPC and 96-bit TID.

What the 32-bit user memory is good for

The EPC normally holds the asset number. The small user bank can hold one short extra value on the tag itself, such as a size class or a calibration cycle code, which a handheld can display without a network connection. Anything longer belongs in your software, with the tag acting as the key.

Fitting and reading it

Read distance is approx. 0.5 m on metal, so this is a close-range tag: scan it at a tool counter, an instrument tray or a test bench with a UHF handheld or a desktop reader. At 4.3 mm it is taller than the 2.8 mm micro tags in this range, so check clearance if it sits on a part that moves or stacks. For background on chip families, see our Impinj vs NXP chip guide.

Typical applications

  • Hand tool issue and return
  • Surgical instrument tracking
  • Electronic sub-assemblies
  • Calibration gauges
  • Small valves and fittings
  • MRO workshop spares

Frequently asked questions

How is the IDTS-0803 different from other micro PCB tags?
Mainly the chip. It uses an Impinj Monza R6-P with 32 bits of user memory, where the 6 × 3 mm IDTS-0603 uses a U8 chip with EPC and TID only. The trade-off is height: the IDTS-0803 is 4.3 mm tall at its raised boss.
What read range does it give on metal?
Approx. 0.5 m when mounted on metal. The range is short because the antenna area is tiny, so it suits tool issue and return, bench scanning and calibration checks rather than portal reads. Actual range depends on reader power, antenna and the asset.
Will standard UHF readers in India read it?
Yes. It uses the ISO 18000-6C protocol and covers 860–960 MHz, which includes India's licence-exempt 865–868 MHz band, so standard UHF handheld, desktop and fixed readers can read and encode it.
Can it stay on parts that get hot?
It is rated to operate from −20 °C to +150 °C, which covers unconditioned stores and warm process areas. Make sure the adhesive or fixing you use is rated for the same range.
Can you encode the tags before dispatch?
Yes. Ask for custom encoding of the EPC, or of the user memory, to your numbering scheme when you request a quote. On parts this small it saves handling at your end.
