Overview

A micro on-metal UHF RFID tag for parts with almost no surface

The IDTS-0603 is a PCB block 6 mm long, 3 mm wide and 2.8 mm high. It is meant for metal items where even a miniature label has nowhere to sit: a drill bit shank, a cutting insert, the flat of a dental instrument, the corner of a populated circuit board. As an anti-metal design, it treats the metal underneath as its mounting surface rather than as interference.

What 0.5 m on metal means in practice

The quoted read distance is approx. 0.5 m when mounted on metal. Plan for close-range reads: a handheld held over an instrument tray, a desktop reader at the tool-crib counter, or an antenna built into a bench station. It is not a tag for dock-door portals or long aisle sweeps. If you need longer reads, look at the larger tags in the PCB and ceramic tag range.

Fixing and encoding

No mounting hole or adhesive backing is specified, so plan to bond the tag with an adhesive or epoxy suited to the asset's surface and the temperatures it sees. The U8 chip has a 128-bit EPC you write with your own asset numbers and a 96-bit TID set at the factory, so every tag also carries a unique serial for audits. Any ISO 18000-6C UHF handheld reader can read and encode it.

Typical applications

  • Drill bits and cutting inserts
  • Surgical and dental instruments
  • PCB and module serialisation
  • Calibration probes and adapters
  • Connectors and rack hardware

Frequently asked questions

How small is the IDTS-0603 and what can it go on?
It measures 6 × 3 mm and stands 2.8 mm at its highest point. That suits metal items that cannot carry a label or a standard on-metal tag, such as tool bits, cutting inserts, slim surgical or dental instruments and circuit boards.
Does it read when fixed directly to metal?
Yes. It is an anti-metal tag designed to sit on metal, where an ordinary UHF label detunes. Expect approx. 0.5 m on metal; the actual distance depends on the reader, antenna, power setting and the asset. Test a sample on your own part before a large order.
How do I attach it if there is no hole or adhesive backing?
Bond it with an industrial adhesive or epoxy rated for your metal and for the temperatures the asset sees. On tools that get knocked, a shallow pocket lets the tag sit flush. Do not cover the top face with metal, as that blocks the signal.
Which reader should I use, and does it work in India?
Any ISO 18000-6C UHF reader. The tag covers 860–960 MHz, which includes India's licence-exempt 865–868 MHz band. Because the read distance is short, a handheld or a desktop reader at the issue counter works better than a fixed portal.
Can the tags be supplied with our asset numbers already written?
Yes, the 128-bit EPC is writable. Ask for custom encoding when you add the tags to your quote list; with parts this small, receiving them pre-encoded saves a lot of handling.
