Overview

Wi-Fi UHF RFID 4-port reader for hard-to-cable sites

This IHZ4 version adds built-in Wi-Fi to the 4-port UHF RFID reader, so tag data can reach your server without a network cable to the read point. It is meant for places where pulling Ethernet is costly, disruptive or temporary: an older building with finished walls, a rented warehouse, a production line that gets rearranged, or a gate that may move next season.

What changes, and what stays the same

The RF side is the IHZ4 platform: Impinj E710 with a dual power-amplifier circuit, up to 1,000 tags per second, up to 30 m read and 8 m write range depending on the site, and four SMA antenna ports. The reader still needs power at the mounting point; Wi-Fi removes only the data cable.

Wired connections are RJ45, RS-232 and USB 2.0. Unlike the standard IHZ4, this version does not list RS-485 or Wiegand, so if tag IDs must go to a door or attendance controller over Wiegand, choose the standard or the PoE IHZ4. The 3 inputs and 3 relay outputs remain for sensors, lamps and barriers.

Getting a stable wireless link

  • Check Wi-Fi signal strength at the exact mounting point first; metal racking and rolling shutters weaken it.
  • Give the reader a fixed IP address or DHCP reservation so your software always finds it.
  • Use the direct post API to push reads to your server, and design the software to cope with a short network drop.
  • Mount the reader near its read zone so the antenna coaxial cables stay short.

For where readers fit in a warehouse rollout, see the warehouse RFID implementation guide.

Where the IDTS-IHZ4(Wifi) is used

  • Retrofits in finished buildings
  • Rented warehouses
  • Temporary event gates
  • Reconfigurable production lines
  • School attendance points
  • Library exits

Frequently asked questions

Does the Wi-Fi reader still need a power cable?
Yes. Wi-Fi carries the data, but the reader needs power at the mounting point. Plan a power outlet near the read zone, or choose the PoE IHZ4 if one Ethernet cable for power and data is easier to run.
Can it send tag IDs to an access or attendance controller over Wiegand?
This Wi-Fi version lists Wi-Fi, RJ45, RS-232 and USB 2.0, without Wiegand or RS-485. For Wiegand output to a door or attendance controller, use the standard or PoE IHZ4. Its 3 relay outputs can still switch a lock, barrier or lamp.
What read range and speed should I expect?
Up to 30 m read and 8 m write, depending on antennas, tags and environment, at up to 1,000 tags per second. Test with your own tags at the actual mounting position.
Which software works with it?
Java, .NET and C++ APIs are available, and the direct post API sends tag data to your server over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The reader also supports RSSI, antenna detection, online updates and data filtering.
Is the Wi-Fi IHZ4 approved for use in India?
It operates in India’s licence-exempt 865–868 MHz UHF band. If your tender needs compliance documents for this reader, ask for them with your quote.
