Overview
IDTS-IHZ16 16-port UHF RFID reader for fixed read points
The IDTS-IHZ16 is the IHZ4 with sixteen SMA antenna ports and is otherwise the same reader. It is a fixed UHF RFID reader that drives up to sixteen external antennas from one unit. Inside is the same Impinj E710 platform with a dual power-amplifier circuit, listed at up to 1,000 tags per second and, with the right antennas and tags, up to 30 m of read range. Sixteen ports suit layouts with many read zones close to one reader, such as a row of entrances, library exits, controlled doors or toll lanes.
Connecting a sixteen-zone reader
However many antennas are fitted, the reader has one set of interfaces, so plan what each one serves:
- RJ45 Ethernet: the main data path for all sixteen zones, to network software, a server or the direct post API
- Wiegand: tag IDs in card-reader format for an access or attendance controller at a door or gate within the layout
- RS-485 and RS-232: PLCs and serial controllers, with RS-485 for the longer runs
- USB 2.0: set-up and testing at a bench
- 3 inputs and 3 relay outputs: sensors, plus a boom barrier, hooter or lamp where a zone needs one
Custom software can use the Java, .NET and C++ APIs. The reader also reports RSSI, filters data, takes online updates and detects connected antennas, which helps you check sixteen cable runs before handover.
Planning the read zones
Sixteen SMA ports let one reader serve many read zones: a row of dock doors, every lane of a multi-lane gate, portals with antennas on several sides, or many shelf and cabinet zones in a store room. Mount the reader centrally so that each coaxial cable to its antenna stays short; long coax runs lose RF signal. Output power is adjustable from 0 to 33 dBm in 1 dB steps, so the read field can be trimmed to stop tags beyond the zone being picked up.
Like the IHZ4, it has an aluminium, anti-shock housing meant for factory and warehouse sites. Choose UHF antennas to suit each zone from the RFID antenna range.
Which port count to choose
Match the port count to the number of read zones. The 4-port IHZ4 suits a single gate or doorway and the 8-port IDTS-IHZ8 a few neighbouring zones; the IDTS-IHZ16 is for layouts with more zones than eight ports can cover. All three are the same reader apart from the number of antenna ports.
Typical applications
- School time attendance
- Personnel tracking in plants
- Library security gates
- Door access control
- Toll plaza lanes
- Warehouse dock doors
