Overview
PoE UHF RFID 4-port reader: one cable for power and data
This is the Power over Ethernet version of the IHZ4 4-port UHF RFID reader. A single Ethernet cable from a PoE switch or injector both powers the reader and carries its data, so there is no mains socket or adapter to fit at the read point. That matters most where readers sit high up or far from power: above dock doors, on gate gantries, in ceilings and along toll or parking lanes.
Why PoE helps at gates and dock doors
- No power point at the reader. One cable to route, protect and maintain instead of two.
- Central backup. Put the PoE switch on a UPS and every reader on it rides through power cuts.
- Remote restart. On a managed PoE switch, a reader can be power-cycled without a ladder.
- Neater mounts. Fewer cables at the gantry or ceiling means a cleaner, safer install.
Same IHZ4 reading performance
Inside, it is the IHZ4 platform: Impinj E710 with a dual power-amplifier circuit, up to 1,000 tags per second, and a read range of up to 30 m depending on antennas, tags and site. Four SMA antenna ports (an 8-port option is also offered) let one reader watch both sides of a dock door or two adjacent lanes. Besides the PoE Ethernet port it keeps RS-232, RS-485, Wiegand and USB 2.0, with 3 inputs and 3 relay outputs for sensors, barriers and lamps.
Planning a PoE installation
Confirm the reader’s PoE power requirement against your switch or injector when you request a quote. Keep Ethernet runs within the usual 100 m limit, and mount the reader close to its antennas so the coaxial cables stay short. For layouts at dock doors and choke points, see the gate and portal reader guide. To compare, the standard IHZ4 offers the same interfaces without PoE listed, and the Wi-Fi IHZ4 suits sites where a network cable cannot be run.
