Overview
A UHF RFID starter kit for your phone
Before deciding whether RFID belongs in your shop, office or app, it helps to hold a tagged item near a reader and watch the numbers come up. The UCR10 starter kit does that with the phone or tablet you already own: the reader plugs into its USB-C port and runs from it, and the kit adds the sample tags and the UCR10 Flow app. The phone itself is not part of the kit, so the trial runs on hardware your staff already handle.
A first trial with UCR10 Flow
In UCR10 Flow, Identium's Android app for the reader, a short trial looks like this:
- Count one shelf. Tag some items on one shelf or tray, note how many, then run a bulk count and compare; a low RSSI flags a tag that is barely heard.
- Check a pick list. Load the EPCs of those items as a pick list, take some items away and scan again: the missing list should name exactly those items.
- Time a search. Hide one tagged item on a nearby shelf and see how quickly the finder's beeps bring you to it.
- Number your equipment. Encode a sample tag with your own asset number, lock it and fix it to a laptop.
- Keep the result. Export the saved session as a PDF for the record or as Excel to check against your asset register.
Keyboard mode makes the reader type tag numbers into whichever app is in focus. That is also how the UCR10 works with USB-C iPhones on iOS 17 or later; if you plan an iPhone roll-out, check the app route with us first.
Where a 1.5 m USB-C starter kit fits
Read range is up to 1.5 m, and that is by design: good for a shelf, a drawer of assets or a tray at arm's length, not for counting a whole room or a warehouse aisle. Small shops can use it to check a single rack or display case, and offices to verify tagged laptops and equipment desk by desk. The reader runs on the phone's battery, so start a longer count with the phone charged.
Developers can treat it as an RFID development kit: connect the reader to a test build of your own inventory or asset-register app and watch real EPCs arrive before choosing production hardware. If the trial goes well and staff need cordless reading with more reach, step up to the MUBR01 Bluetooth kit (0–3 m) or the CX1500N inventory kit. Our guide on reading UHF tags with a phone compares these routes, and the reader's full details are on the UCR10 page.
