Overview

What the UHF RFID handheld scanner evaluation kit does

This kit lets you try UHF RFID in the software you already use, with nothing to install. The UBR90H handheld scanner reads one UHF tag at a time at up to 35 cm and types its number, like a keyboard, into whichever field has focus: an Excel sheet, a billing or ERP screen, a web form. The kit holds the scanner, its 2.4G USB dongle and UHF sample tags chosen for your items.

What to try during the trial

  • Scan into your own screen. Plug the dongle into a counter PC, click into the item or asset code field and scan a tagged item. The number should appear where the cursor is, just as if someone had typed it.
  • Pick the link for each desk. Use the 2.4G dongle on a PC, pair the scanner over Bluetooth LE with a phone or tablet, or connect over USB. It works as a keyboard on Windows, Android, Linux and iOS devices.
  • Walk around, upload later. In offline mode the scanner stores up to 128 tag records, so you can check a shelf or a room of equipment away from the PC and upload the records over USB back at the desk.
  • Test the sample tags on your items. Fix labels to cartons, files, books or equipment and scan them at the distance staff will hold the scanner. The 0.9-inch OLED shows the tag type and ID of each read, and stays readable in strong light.

Where a 35 cm keyboard scanner fits, and where it does not

The UBR90H suits work done one item at a time: a billing or stock counter, an asset check-in desk, a library or records desk, a goods-in table. At these points a short read range is an advantage: it helps keep the read on the item in hand rather than on items further along the desk.

It is not a bulk or long-range reader. To count a whole shelf or tray in one pass, from further away, trial the MUBR01 Bluetooth reader kit or the CX1000 and CX1500N handheld kits. If you also need to write your own numbers into tags before they go on, the 103 desktop reader kit is the one for encoding. Our guide to scanning RFID into Excel in keyboard mode shows how keyboard output works with spreadsheets and forms.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to install any software to use the scanner?
No. The UBR90H is plug and play: it works as a keyboard (HID), so each tag number is typed into whichever field has focus in Excel, your billing or ERP screen, or a web form. There is no driver to install, and the kit contains no software because none is needed.
Which devices does the UBR90H work with?
Windows, Android, Linux and iOS devices, as a keyboard. Connect it over 2.4 GHz wireless with the USB dongle in the kit, over Bluetooth LE, or over USB.
How close does a tag need to be?
Within 35 cm, and the scanner is meant to read one item at a time. What you get depends on the tag's size and on the item it is fixed to, since metal and liquid near a UHF tag usually shorten the range. To count a shelf in one pass, look at the MUBR01 Bluetooth reader kit instead.
Can staff scan away from the PC and upload later?
Yes. In offline mode the scanner stores up to 128 tag records in its memory and uploads them later over USB. Connected over 2.4G or Bluetooth, it sends each tag number in real time instead.
Which sample tags come with the kit?
A mix of UHF tags and labels suited to the items you name, for example paper labels for files and books, carton labels for goods-in, or on-metal tags for equipment. The sample mix is confirmed with your order.
