Overview

What an RFID hang tag does in a retail store

An RFID hang tag, or RFID swing tag, is a paper price ticket with a UHF RFID inlay laminated inside. The printed face carries the brand, price and barcode, while the chip gives each item its own EPC number that a reader picks up without line of sight.

Because it replaces the swing ticket rather than adding a label, it goes on at the same packing step. Staff can count a rail of hung garments without unhooking tickets, billing counters can read several items together, and exit readers can support loss prevention; see RFID self-checkout and billing counters.

How the RFID swing tag is built

An Impinj Monza R6-P inlay is laminated between two printable faces of coated art paper, so the tag prints and hangs like a normal swing ticket and reads on standard EPC Gen2 UHF readers.

Choosing a size and format

The simplest switch keeps your current ticket size and layout. If yours differs from the standard tag, the RFID version can be made to match, with the inlay and build for that size confirmed in the quotation.

This is a finished ticket, printed and encoded to order. If you print and encode in-house on an RFID printer, a roll tag such as the UHF RFID Apparel Tag ID-3050 U8 suits better; for adhesive labels on boxes, see UHF RFID inlays and labels.

Attaching the RFID hang tag

  • Attach: used as a UHF RFID garment tag, the standard tag hangs through its 3 mm hole on a string, loop or tag fastener.
  • Handle: keep tags dry, sealed until use and out of direct sunlight; do not fold or crush the chip area.

Typical applications

  • Apparel swing tickets
  • Retail price tags
  • Footwear and accessories
  • Store stock counts
  • Distribution centre receiving
  • RFID billing counters
  • Retail loss prevention

Frequently asked questions

Can I get other sizes, or tags printed with my own design?
Yes. The standard size is 110 × 37 mm, and other sizes such as 80 × 50 mm or 60 × 40 mm can be made to order; the construction and inlay for a custom size are confirmed with your quote. Both faces can be printed. With your enquiry, send the tag size, front and back artwork, quantity per size, and the price, barcode and numbering data to print, plus whether the EPC should be GS1 SGTIN-96 or your own numbers.
Will the hang tag read on garments exported to Europe or the US?
Yes. The Impinj Monza R6-P chip works across 860–960 MHz. That covers India’s 865–868 MHz band and the UHF RFID bands used in Europe and the US, so the same tag can be read at your unit in India and on the overseas buyer’s readers.
Which reader do I need, and how far does it read?
Any EPC Gen2 UHF reader working in India’s 865–868 MHz band: a UHF handheld reader for stock counts, or a fixed reader with antennas at billing counters and exits. Read distance depends on the reader, the antenna and how garments are hung or stacked, so test with your own stock. HF/NFC readers, including a smartphone’s built-in NFC, cannot read this UHF tag.
Can the tags come encoded with GS1 / EPC numbers?
Yes. Tags can be EPC-encoded to order with your numbering. A GS1 SGTIN-96 fits in the 128-bit EPC memory, so suppliers to retailers with an RFID mandate usually encode that. See our guide to GS1 and EPC encoding for Indian retail suppliers.
Can the RFID hang tag go through washing?
No. It is a paper tag and should be kept away from water; like any swing ticket, it is removed before the garment is washed. For items that must be tracked through washing, use washable RFID laundry tags.
