Short answer: An RFID chip running test times each recruitment candidate with passive UHF chips fixed to the legs or feet. Mat antennas at the start, lap and finish lines read the chips. Boards now combine the chips with biometric identity checks, CCTV and live server monitoring, and at Gujarat's recruitment ground in Kheda each candidate wore two chips. The race is pass or fail, and CRPF's 2026 constable notice allows no appeal.
This guide is for agencies bidding on per-candidate PET tenders for police bharti, CAPF and Home Guard recruitment, and for boards running the test in-house. For mat antennas and other timing hardware basics, see our marathon race timing guide.
How does an RFID chip running test work on a police recruitment track?
Each candidate wears passive UHF RFID chips that a reader detects at mat antennas across the track. The start read opens the clock, each lap-mat crossing adds a lap, and the crossing that completes the distance is the finish time, checked against the limit for pass or fail.
Lap logic is the core of a PET race:
- One crossing, many reads. A reader sees a chip many times over a mat; the software merges them into one crossing using a minimum lap time.
- Measured lap length. On a 400 m track, 1.6 km is four laps, but district grounds vary, so measure the running line per venue.
- Half laps. 5 km on a 400 m track is 12.5 laps, so the start sits half a lap from the finish and usually gets its own mat.
- Raw reads kept. Store chip ID, mat, timestamp and batch for every read, so results can be rebuilt.
Which police and CAPF recruitments use an RFID chip running test in 2026?
CRPF's advertisement dated 8 April 2026 for Constable (Technical & Tradesmen and Pioneer) 2026 states that PET and PST "will be conducted through Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) and Digitalized Equipment for measuring" (para 15).
That notice listed 9,175 Technical & Tradesmen vacancies plus 20 Pioneer posts. HSSC (Haryana Staff Selection Commission) decided to fit RFID devices on candidates' feet, Punjab Kesari reported in May 2026, and Gujarat's PSI/LRD recruitment for 13,591 posts used RFID chips to record running times.
| Recruitment and group | Men | Women | Laps on a 400 m track |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRPF 2026, group 1 (CT/Driver, Motor Mechanic Vehicle and 8 other trades) | 5 km in 24 min | 1.6 km in 8 min 30 s | 12.5 / 4 |
| CRPF 2026, group 2 (Cook, Water Carrier, Barber, Washerman, Safai Karamchari and similar trades) | 1.6 km in 10 min | 1.6 km in 12 min | 4 / 4 |
| CRPF 2026, Pioneer (CT/Mason, CT/Electrician) | 1.6 km in 9 min | Not applicable (male posts only) | 4 |
| HSSC, Haryana Police | 2.5 km in 12 min | 1 km in 6 min | 6.25 / 2.5 |
Why does a chip running test use two RFID chips per candidate?
Two chips give redundancy and a cross-check. If one chip is missed, the other can still record the crossing. If a candidate's two chips are read at different moments, or one appears without its partner, the software flags it. A split pair shows up this way; a whole pair moved to another runner does not, and has to be caught by the two-pairs-together, headcount, CCTV and finish-desk checks below.
In Kheda, Gujarat Samachar reported on 29 January 2026, a candidate allegedly used a hidden cutter blade to remove the two RFID sensor chips from his legs and handed both to a friend in the same batch. During live monitoring, staff saw chest number 258 logged as running on the server while the candidate himself had no chips on his legs. Four RFID chips and a cutter blade were recovered.
- Use single-use, tamper-evident straps, one chip on each leg or shoe.
- Check both straps at the finish desk before accepting a result.
- Count every chip back after each batch, and screen candidates for blades before the start.
How is the RFID chip linked to the right candidate before the race?
Chips should be bound to a candidate at a registration desk just before the race, after the biometric identity check. CRPF's 2026 notice places biometric data capturing ahead of PET and PST (para 14). Save chip IDs against roll and chest numbers, so every track read maps to one verified person.
Gujarat made biometric registration mandatory, with fingerprint and facial verification at every stage, DeshGujarat reported on 30 January 2026.
- Issue chips as a numbered pair and scan both into the record; never type chip numbers.
- Re-verify identity at the finish, so the finisher is the person who was bound.
- Lock bindings at the start; later changes need a logged supervisor login.
What does live server monitoring catch during a running test?
Live monitoring shows each candidate's laps and elapsed time during the batch, so staff can spot anomalies while the batch is running rather than after results are out.
For HSSC's test at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Punjab Kesari reported in May 2026 that CCTV was being installed across the whole ground and that each candidate's time would be shown live on a screen. Gujarat monitored its tests from a central control room in Gandhinagar. Configure these alerts, each linked to CCTV by timestamp:
| Automatic check | What it flags | Likely cause |
|---|---|---|
| Pair split | A candidate's two chips cross a mat at clearly different times | Chips moved to different runners |
| Two pairs together | Two candidates' chip pairs cross every mat within a fraction of a second | One runner carrying another's chips (Kheda pattern) |
| Single-chip crossings | Only one chip of a pair read on consecutive laps | Chip removed, damaged or covered |
| Impossible lap | A lap faster than the plausible minimum for the venue | Track cut, or chip carried by a faster runner |
| No start read | A chip on the lap mat without a start crossing | Late entry, or a chip brought onto the track |
| Chips vs headcount | More active chips than candidates on camera | One runner carrying another's chips |
What does a police or Home Guard RFID PET tender ask the agency for?
A PET tender can judge the agency as much as the equipment. Ramgarh's notice 07/2026, for example, asks for prior recruitment and PET/PST experience, turnover, CMMI and ISO certificates, security deposits and a per-applicant rate. Posted on 1 October 2026 by the district's Deputy Commissioner, it seeks an agency to run the Home Guard enrolment physical test (advertisement 01/2026) through RFID. Its terms, as an example:
| Requirement | Ramgarh notice 07/2026 |
|---|---|
| Price | Sealed bid, per-person rate including all taxes |
| Dates | Short-term notice; bids due about 9 days after posting, opened at the Collectorate NIC VC room |
| Recruitment experience | Certificate for constable, Home Guard or chowkidar recruitment runs in a Jharkhand district in the last 3 years |
| PET/PST experience | PET/PST for Jharkhand government departments or PSUs in the last 3 years |
| Documents | ITRs for FY 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25; presentation to the purchase committee |
| Security | EMD Rs 20,000 by DD; Rs 2,00,000 bank guarantee or FD from the winning bidder |
| Turnover | At least Rs 2 crore in each of the last 5 years, with 5 years in operation (as stated in the notice) |
| Certification | CMMI Level 3 or Level 5 (as stated in the notice); ISO 9001:2015, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 20000-1:2018 |
A Delhi tender listed on firsttender.com on 6 October 2026 covers RFID-based PET, machine-based PST and CCTV recording for CT (Tech/Trade/Pioneer) 2026, CT/GD in CAPFs and Rifleman in Assam Rifles 2026. The listing does not name the issuer; confirm it on eprocure.gov.in.
Why do track layout and batch size matter in a running test?
Candidates challenge race conditions, not only the clock. When the High Court of Bombay at Goa dismissed six candidates' petition against the Goa PSI physical test, their complaints were about track overcrowding, track width and ground condition, not the RFID timing, The Goan reported on 22 January 2026.
That test ran batch-wise from 9 to 17 December 2025, with RFID-based timing operated by a specialised agency, according to the State; 936 candidates ran the 800 m and 449 qualified.
- Size each batch to the track width so runners are not boxed in on the first bend.
- Lay mats across the full running width on a straight, with barriers so no one passes beside them.
- Tape mat edges flat, and keep track measurements, batch lists and CCTV for every session.
What hardware does an RFID running test machine include?
A PET running test machine adds recruitment controls to standard race timing: two chips per candidate on tamper-evident straps, a biometric binding desk, live result screens, and CCTV over the mats and finish desk. Mat placement and choosing an India-band (ETSI) antenna are covered in the marathon guide linked above.

Frequently asked questions
What is an RFID chip running test?
It is a recruitment race in which candidates wear passive UHF RFID chips read by mat antennas at the start, lap and finish lines. Software counts laps and checks the finish time against the published limit.
Where is the RFID chip worn in a police running test?
Reports describe chips on the legs or feet. HSSC decided to fit RFID devices on candidates' feet; the Kheda candidate wore two on his legs.
Can a candidate cheat by swapping RFID chips?
A swap can be attempted, but two chips per candidate, tamper-evident straps, biometric checks and live server monitoring make it easier to detect. In Kheda, where both chips went to one runner, staff spotted suspicious activity on the server during live monitoring.
Is there an appeal if the RFID result shows a candidate failed the race?
It depends on the notice. CRPF's 2026 constable advertisement says there is no appeal in the PET race; failed candidates get a rejection slip.
Do RFID race chips need BIS or WPC approval in India?
Passive RFID tags need neither BIS registration nor WPC Equipment Type Approval; BIS has no RFID-tag category. Every UHF reader model still needs WPC Equipment Type Approval. Verify current rules with WPC and BIS.
