Overview

How the IDTS-LSTH3 race timing shoe tag records a runner

  1. Fit. The tag is looped onto the runner's shoe lace, or clipped to the bib, before the start.
  2. Lay the mats. Timing mats are placed across the course at the start, split points and finish.
  3. Cross. As the runner steps over a mat, the tag is read and the crossing is time-stamped.
  4. Publish. The timing software compiles the reads into a result for each participant.

Why a shoe-mounted chip

On a shoe, the tag passes just above a ground mat, which makes it a natural fit for courses timed entirely with mats. It weighs 3–5 g, so runners barely notice it, and its IPX5 rating covers monsoon rain and puddles on the route. Because it is disposable, there is no tag-collection queue at the finish.

Ordering for an event

Order one tag per registered participant, plus a margin for late entries and replacements. For the timing points, see the RFID UHF mat antenna; if you would rather have the chip inside the race number, compare the UHF RFID marathon bib. Our race timing guide covers mat placement and split planning.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a timing chip?
Yes. The IDTS-LSTH3 is a disposable UHF RFID timing chip that fastens to a runner's shoe lace or bib. Timing mats at the start, splits and finish read it as the athlete crosses.
How does an RFID shoe tag time a marathon?
The tag is fastened to the runner's shoe lace, or to the bib, before the race. Timing mats laid across the course read it at the start, split points and finish, and each crossing is recorded against that runner.
What frequency does the IDTS-LSTH3 use?
865–868 MHz UHF, the licence-exempt UHF RFID band in India, which is the band used by UHF timing readers and mat antennas at Indian events.
Is the shoe tag reusable?
No. It is a disposable, single-event tag, so organisers order one per participant and do not need to collect tags back after the race.
Will rain or puddles affect the tag?
The tag is IPX5 rated, so it is protected against rain and splashes from puddles on the course.
Should I use shoe tags or RFID bibs?
Shoe tags suit mat-only timing points because the chip passes close to the mat. RFID bibs put the chip on the chest and remove the step of fitting a separate tag to every shoe.
