Overview

One standard for the whole herd

ISO 11784/11785 FDX-B at 134.2 kHz is the international standard for animal identification, used by implanted microchips and by electronic ear tags alike. This tag puts an FDX-B transponder in a two-piece TPU button, so a dairy or a municipal tagging drive can tag cattle, goats and sheep in the ear while using the same reader as for the implanted microchip in dogs and smaller animals. The RA91 handheld reader reads FDX-B tags to ISO 11784/11785 and lists its read range for a 30 mm ear tag.

Ear tag or microchip, UHF or FDX-B

An FDX-B ear tag is read at the animal, one at a time, which suits milking parlours, vaccination lines and veterinary records. Where animals must be counted as a group passing a gate, the UHF animal ear tag is read from a distance instead; the animal and pet RFID tags category compares the options, and the livestock ear tag guide covers herd management and India's cattle tagging schemes. For a tag that stays with the animal for life and cannot be lost, see the rumen bolus.

Ordering

Ear tags follow the consumables rule: minimum order 500 pcs. Request a quote with the species, the number series to print and whether you need applicators; the livestock tracking solution page shows how the tags, reader and software fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Which frequency and standard do animal tags use?
Animal identification uses 134.2 kHz under ISO 11784 (the code structure) and ISO 11785 (the air interface), with FDX-B as the transponder type. This tag follows that standard, so any FDX-B reader, including the RA91, reads it.
How far away can the tag be read?
Only as far as the reader allows: FDX-B is a close-range technology. The RA91 lists over 25 cm for a 30 mm ear tag, which varies by tag; expect to hold the reader near the ear rather than scan a pen from a distance.
Can the tags be printed with our numbers?
Yes. A laser-printed management number and logo are available on request; send the number series with your enquiry. The electronic 15-digit ID is fixed in the transponder and supplied as a list with the batch.
