UHF RFID Antenna Cable, SMA Male to SMA Male, 3 m (LMR-195 Class, 50 Ω)

A 3 m, 50 Ω coaxial cable with SMA male connectors at both ends, in the LMR-195 class, for joining a UHF RFID reader with SMA antenna ports to an antenna that has an SMA tail. The short, thin class for an antenna mounted close to the reader.

Key features

  • 50 Ω coaxial cable, SMA male at both ends, 3 m long
  • LMR-195 class: about 0.36 dB per metre at 866 MHz, typical for the class
  • Fits the SMA ports of the IHZ4, IHZ4N and the RM26 reader module
  • For antennas supplied with an SMA tail, such as the 8 dBi and 9 dBi directional PCB antennas
  • Indoor use; keep the run as short as the layout allows
Frequency range
Suited to the 865–868 MHz UHF RFID band; the class is rated well above it

Overview

What the 3 m SMA to SMA antenna cable is for

A fixed UHF reader with SMA antenna ports needs one coaxial cable per antenna. This 3 m cable has an SMA male connector at both ends, so it goes straight onto the SMA ports of the IHZ4, the IHZ4N and the RM26 reader module, and onto an antenna supplied with an SMA tail, such as the 8 dBi and 9 dBi directional PCB antennas. Panel antennas with an N female socket take the N male to SMA male cable instead.

Why cable loss matters

Every decibel lost in the cable comes straight off the power that reaches the antenna, and it costs the same again on the tag's reply. LMR-195 is the thin class: about 0.36 dB per metre at 866 MHz, typical for the class, so a 3 m run loses roughly 1.1 dB plus a little at each connector. That is fine for an antenna beside the reader; for a 10 m run to a dock door choose the thicker LMR-400 class. Our read-range calculator shows what a given cable loss does to the range of a reader and antenna pair, and the antenna guide covers connector and cable selection.

Choosing the length

Measure the actual route, including the loop needed to mount and service the antenna, and order the shortest standard length that reaches. A coiled surplus still loses signal. Lengths and connector pairs other than those listed are quoted on request: request a quote with the reader and antenna models and the number of runs. See all RFID accessories.

Frequently asked questions

How much read range do I lose per metre of cable?
LMR-195 class cable loses about 0.36 dB per metre at 866 MHz, typical for the class, so a 3 m run costs about 1.1 dB before connectors. As a rule of thumb, 6 dB less power at the antenna halves the forward read distance in free space, so a short, thin cable costs little, while a long thin cable costs a lot. Run the numbers for your pair in the read-range calculator.
Is the port on the IHZ4 SMA or RP-SMA?
SMA. The IHZ4 and IHZ4N specifications list four SMA antenna ports, and the RM26 module has one SMA female port, so a cable with SMA male ends fits them directly. A reader from another maker may use RP-SMA, which has the same thread but the opposite centre contact; check its port before ordering, or add the RP-SMA to SMA adapter.
Can I join two cables to make a longer run?
Yes, with a female-to-female SMA coupler, but each joint adds its own loss and is a point where water or vibration can cause trouble. For a run longer than 3 m it is better to order one cable of the right length in the LMR-240 or LMR-400 class.
