Overview

What the RFID race timing solution covers

This is a customised UHF RFID timing setup for organisers who want one supplier for the whole timing job. Every participant gets a numbered bib with a uniquely identifiable UHF tag built in. Timing equipment on the course records each tag as the participant crosses, and the results are posted on the event website.

Because the system is customised, it is scoped around your event: the sport, the course and the points where a time has to be recorded.

How bib-based chip timing works on race day

  1. Allocate bibs. Each registered participant receives a numbered bib with an integrated UHF tag, linked to their entry.
  2. Cross the timing point. The UHF RFID timing equipment reads the tag as the participant passes, with no stopwatch or hand-written entry.
  3. Match the read. Every read is tied to one participant, so each person gets their own time.
  4. Publish. Results go up on the event website for participants and organisers.

Events it is built for

The solution is used for running, cycling, duathlon and triathlon events. Large marathon fields, including charity runs where thousands start together, gain the most, because manual timing cannot keep up when finishers arrive in a steady stream. Multi-sport formats need extra timing points for transitions and laps, so tell us the format when you ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How does RFID race timing work?
Each participant wears a numbered bib with a uniquely identifiable UHF RFID tag. When they cross a timing point, the UHF timing equipment reads the tag and records the time against that participant, and the results are then posted on the event website.
Which events can use this timing solution?
Running, cycling, duathlon and triathlon events. The setup is customised to the format, so share your distances, the number of timing points and the expected field size.
Are race bibs included?
Yes. International standard bibs with integrated UHF tags are provided with the timing solution. Organisers allocate the numbered bibs to participants, and each bib is linked to its wearer's result.
How is the cost worked out for my event?
It depends on the number of participants, the timing points needed and the quantity of bibs, so send your event details for a quote. If you prefer to pay per runner, see the per-participant RFID race timing service.
Can we buy the timing equipment instead?
Yes. Timing teams that run events regularly can buy the RTUS automated RFID race timing system and use it across their own events.
