Overview

The ID-UM01 is a UHF RFID reader module with its antenna built in: a 45.5 × 45.5 × 9.3 mm assembly carrying an E310 reader chip and a 2.5 dBi ceramic patch antenna, so your device needs no external antenna, coax or RF connector. It reads EPC Gen2 tags at a peak rate of over 350 tags per second and at over 4 m, depending on the tag and its surroundings, and takes commands over UART. It is sold from 1 unit (price on request); ask us for evaluation samples and SDK access.

What the ID-UM01 UHF RFID module with integrated antenna is for

It is made to be built into handheld terminals, desktop encoders, all-in-one readers, kiosks and portable devices for warehousing, logistics, production-line and inspection work. An anti-collision algorithm identifies moving or stationary tags, and carrier cancellation keeps it stable in electrically noisy places. It reports RSSI and phase per tag, inventories temperature-sensing tags and buffers up to 1,000 tags.

Designing around the built-in antenna

There is no antenna to source and no coax to route. A patch antenna reads mainly from its face, so keep that face behind plastic, clear of metal, batteries and displays, and route inter-board cabling close to ground and away from the antenna. The trade-off is reach: over 4 m suits a handheld, encoder or kiosk, while a dock door, a gate lane or several read zones need a reader with antenna ports.

Connectors, power and start-up

  • 12-pin FFC/FPC (1.0 mm pitch): the full interface, with power, UART, enable, reset, and two inputs and two outputs at 3.3 V TTL.
  • 5-pin harness (1.25 mm pitch, optional): power and UART only, for space-constrained designs.
  • Supply: 3.6–5.25 V DC, sized for the 6.5 W peak (1.3 A at 5 V) at 33 dBm, with a 22–100 µF tantalum capacitor on VCC.
  • Cooling: the module needs an external heat sink with air cooling; plan the enclosure for a draw of up to 6.5 W at 33 dBm (5 W at 30 dBm).
  • Start-up: allow about 100 ms after power-up before sending commands, and don't assert RESET in that time. Drive EN high to run and low to power down to 0.25 mW; don't leave EN unconnected.
  • UART speed: 9600–921600 bps (default 115200); use a higher rate for large tag populations.

Frequency band and regional profiles

The hardware covers 860–960 MHz, which includes India's 865–868 MHz band. One regional profile is active at a time, preset before dispatch or set by command; profiles include India, Europe, North America, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and China. Output is adjustable from 5 to 33 dBm in 1 dB steps, with 30 dBm the maximum on the regional builds for India, Europe, the US, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. Use EPC Gen2 tags tuned for the same band from the UHF RFID tags range.

SDKs and ordering

SDKs for Windows, Linux and Android, with C, C#/.NET and Java APIs, let one module serve a Windows encoder, a Linux kiosk or an Android handheld.

When you order, confirm the destination market, the band and any radio type-approval your product needs. For evaluation samples, SDK access or integration support, request a quote.

For Ethernet, RS485 or Wiegand with an external antenna, see the IDTS-RM26 and the other UHF RFID reader modules.

Also consider the UHF RFID reader module, UART, 865–868 MHz, a generic development module for microcontroller prototypes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ID-UM01 need an external antenna?
No. A 2.5 dBi ceramic patch antenna is integrated into the module, so no external antenna, cable or RF connector is needed. Keep the antenna face behind plastic and clear of metal and batteries in your enclosure. If you need several read zones, choose a multi-port board from the UHF RFID reader modules range; for a single fixed point with your own antenna, see the IDTS-RM26.
How far does it read?
Over 4 m with the integrated antenna, as rated. What you get depends on the tag, what it is fixed to (metal and liquid usually shorten the range), its orientation, the output power and the surroundings, so test with your own tags. In a desktop encoder you can turn the power down to keep reads close. The read-range calculator shows how power and tag choice change the range.
How does it connect to my host board?
Over a TTL UART at 9600–921600 bps (default 115200 bps, 8N1). The 12-pin FFC/FPC connector (1.0 mm pitch) carries the full interface: power, UART, EN, RST and two 3.3 V TTL inputs and outputs. The optional 5-pin harness connector (1.25 mm pitch) carries power and UART only, for space-constrained designs. Use a higher baud rate when you inventory large tag populations.
What power supply does it need?
3.6–5.25 V DC. Size the supply for the peak: 6.5 W (1.3 A at 5 V) at 33 dBm, or 5 W at 30 dBm, and mount the module on an external heat sink with air cooling. Fit a 22–100 µF tantalum capacitor on VCC and allow about 100 ms after power-up before sending commands. Drive EN high to run and low to power the module down (0.25 mW); don't leave EN unconnected. Low-power standby draws 0.03 W.
Which frequency band does it use in India?
The hardware covers 860–960 MHz, which includes India's 865–868 MHz band. One regional profile is active at a time, preset before dispatch or set by command, and the India build is limited to 30 dBm output. Confirm the band with your order, and if the product is for export, tell us the destination country so we can supply the matching regional profile.
Which software works with the module?
Identium ReaderSense, our desktop software, works with the ID-UM01 for configuration, live inventory, AISense tuning and Auto Mode HTTP POST of reads to your own system; it is listed under Software below. To build the module into your own application there are SDKs for Windows, Linux and Android, with C, C#/.NET and Java APIs. SDK access is given on request, along with evaluation samples and integration support.
How is it different from the IDTS-RM26 module?
The ID-UM01 is a 45.5 mm module with its antenna built in, a UART and GPIO interface and a 3.6–5.25 V supply, made to be embedded in handhelds, desktop encoders and kiosks. The IDTS-RM26 is a larger board with one SMA port for an external antenna, Ethernet, RS232, RS485, Wiegand 26/34 and a relay on a 9–24 V supply, made for parking lanes, gates, barriers and cabinets.
