Overview
What the ID-SL15 UHF RFID sled reader does
A sled is a UHF RFID reader that clips onto the back of a phone or tablet. The ID-SL15 supplies the RFID hardware, including antenna, radio, battery and buttons, while the phone your team already carries runs the app over Bluetooth 5.2. You get long-range reading without buying a dedicated handheld terminal, and when the phone is replaced the reader stays in service.
Range and aiming
With 33 dBm of output, a 3 dBi circularly polarised antenna and receive sensitivity better than −85 dBm, the ID-SL15 is rated for up to 16 m, with 15 m stable outdoors on B-class power tags in Identium's tests. That is enough to count a rack face from the aisle instead of touching every carton. The antenna sits on a hinge that turns through 180°, so the operator can aim at a high shelf, a pallet face or the floor without twisting the wrist, then fold it flat for carrying. Output can also be turned right down to pick out a single tag on a crowded shelf.
Fit, power and options
- Clip: a spring-loaded back clip; choose the phone clip (phones 68–88 mm wide) or the tablet clip (110–130 mm, 4–8 inch) when ordering.
- Battery: a 6,500 mAh cell gives 2.6–3.4 hours of continuous UHF reading and can top up the host phone through the Type-C port.
- Barcodes: an optional 1D/2D imager reads QR, DataMatrix, PDF417 and common linear codes for sites that still use barcode labels.
- Wired use: a USB Type-C port, convertible to RS232 or RS485.
- Build: IP54 sealing and a −25 to +60 °C operating range for warehouse floors and open yards.
Choosing the right variant
For use in India, order the ID-SL15-IN (865–868 MHz). The -US (902–928 MHz) and -CN (920–925 MHz) versions are for export projects, and adding -2D to any code fits the barcode engine.
Software and integration
The Android and iOS SDK covers inventory, single-tag read, write, lock and kill, plus power and session control, and a demo app is available for bench trials. Reads can also be routed into Identium's reader-management and asset management platforms, which pass data on by HTTP POST, WebSocket or direct database write. Our guide sled vs USB-C vs handheld explains when a sled beats a full handheld, and the fixed asset audit guide walks through a typical verification project.
Typical applications
- Warehouse cycle counting
- Fixed asset verification
- Retail stock-take
- Utility meter audits
- Dock gate-in and gate-out
- Field service and maintenance
