125 kHz RFID Reader Module, UART (EM4100-Format Tags)

A 125 kHz reader module that outputs the ID of an EM4100-format card, fob or token over a serial UART line, for prototyping attendance, door and asset readers on microcontroller boards. The low-frequency counterpart of the RC522: it reads our 125 kHz cards and tokens, not 13.56 MHz or UHF.

Key features

  • Reads EM4100-format 125 kHz tags: the 64-bit read-only ID used by most LF cards and fobs
  • Serial UART (TTL) output, 9600 baud, typical for the class
  • 5 V supply, typical for the class
  • On-board or external coil antenna, as sourced
  • Reads our 125 kHz cards, LF tokens and key fobs at a few centimetres

Overview

The simplest reader there is

Hold an EM4100-format card to the coil and the module sends its ID down a serial line as a short string of characters; the microcontroller reads the string and decides what to do. There is nothing to configure. That is why 125 kHz modules are the usual choice for a first attendance, door or locker prototype, and for teaching how a reader talks to a controller. The RC522 and PN532 modules are the 13.56 MHz equivalents.

Which tags it reads

Most low-frequency cards and fobs use the EM4100 format: our 125 kHz cards, LF tokens and LF key fobs, and a T5577 card programmed to that format. It does not read 13.56 MHz cards, UHF tags or the 134.2 kHz FDX-B tags used for animals, which need the RA91 reader. Read range is a few centimetres, typical for the class, and depends on the coil and the tag.

From prototype to product

For a finished installation use a housed reader such as the 125 kHz USB desktop reader or the card attendance terminal, which come ready to connect. Modules are quoted from one unit: request a quote. All our HF, NFC and LF card readers are listed together.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a finished product around this module?
Development modules are sold for prototyping. Ask us before you build a commercial product around one.
Can it read 13.56 MHz or FASTag?
No. It reads 125 kHz EM4100-format tags only. 13.56 MHz cards need the RC522 or PN532 module, and UHF tags such as FASTag need a UHF reader or the UHF development module.
What does the module send over the serial line?
The tag's ID as a short string of characters at 9600 baud, typical for the class, each time a tag is presented; the exact framing (start and stop characters, checksum) is given in the board's documentation. Your code reads the line and matches the ID against its list.
