Overview

How the ID-ANT-85CP UHF RFID mat antenna works

A mat antenna lies flat on the ground across the path people take, with its field directed upward. Anyone carrying a UHF tag, such as a race bib label, a shoe tag or an ID badge, is read as they walk or run over it, without stopping or presenting a card. That hands-free, walk-over read is why mats, also called carpet or floor antennas, are used at timing lines and busy entry points.

The ID-ANT-85CP has 8.5 dBi gain, a 65° beam and circular polarisation. It operates on both the ETSI 865–868 MHz band used in India and Europe and the FCC 902–928 MHz band, so organisers who also time events abroad can use the same mat with the reader set to the local band.

Where it is used

  • Marathons and sports timing: start, split and finish lines where every runner's bib has to be captured.
  • Access control and attendance: staff or students are logged as they pass through an entrance, with no queue at a card reader.
  • People counting: recording tagged visitors as they cross into a hall or zone.
  • Security checkpoints: walk-through reading where badges stay in a pocket or on a lanyard.

Planning a timing or entry line

The mat is the antenna only. It connects to a UHF fixed reader, which feeds timing, attendance or access software. Circular polarisation helps when bib tags twist and flex as runners move, and the reader's anti-collision handling lets it log many tags crossing together. Wide roads and gates are usually covered with several mats laid side by side, each on its own reader port.

The connector is SMA or TNC; specify the one that matches your reader cables when you order. Tag choice and placement matter as much as the mat, so test a few tagged bibs over it before race day. Our race timing guide covers start and finish hardware and band choice, and matching UHF race labels and complete systems are under RFID race timing solutions.

Typical applications

  • Marathon finish lines
  • Race split points
  • Entry and exit gates

Frequently asked questions

What is an RFID mat antenna used for?
A mat, carpet or floor antenna is laid across a path so tags are read as people walk or run over it. The ID-ANT-85CP is used for marathon and sports timing, access control, attendance, people counting and walk-through security checkpoints.
Does the ID-ANT-85CP work on India's 865–868 MHz band?
Yes. It covers the ETSI 865–868 MHz band, which is the licence-exempt UHF RFID band in India under G.S.R. 853(E), 2021. It also covers the FCC 902–928 MHz band for events in the US and other FCC-band countries.
Which tags work with this mat antenna?
Passive UHF tags that work in the band your reader is set to, such as race bib labels, shoe tags and UHF ID badges. Read results depend on where the tag sits on the body, so test your chosen tag with the mat before an event. See our UHF race timing labels.
Which connector does it use?
SMA or TNC. Tell us which connector your reader or cables use when you order.
How is it different from the IDTS-UMAT mat antenna?
The IDTS-UMAT is a separate 6 dBi mat system listed for 865–868 MHz, sold mainly for race timing. The ID-ANT-85CP has higher gain (8.5 dBi) and covers both the ETSI and FCC bands.
