Overview

When a DESFire card is specified

A plain 13.56 MHz card hands any reader its serial number; a DESFire card makes the reader prove it holds the right key before it releases any data, using AES mutual authentication, and it can hold several applications in separate files with their own keys. That is why transit and automated-fare specifications, campus cards that double as canteen and library cards, and corporate access systems that have been through a security review name the DESFire family. Our RFID data security guide explains cloning and encryption in plain terms.

EV3, EV2 and the reader

EV3 is the current member of the family and EV2 its predecessor; we supply EV3 and state EV2 where that is what is sourced. Both work only with readers and controllers that support ISO 14443-4 and the DESFire command set, so check the access controller or ticketing system before ordering; a reader that only reads a UID will see the card but cannot use its security. For a plain or MIFARE Classic card, see the NFC card and the plain 13.56 MHz card; the RFID card buyer's guide compares the chip families.

Ordering

Cards follow the consumables rule: minimum order 500 pcs. Supplied blank or printed like our printed ID cards; keys and application files are set by your system integrator. Request a quote with the memory size and the system the cards will run on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between DESFire and MIFARE Classic?
MIFARE Classic uses an older proprietary cipher and a sector memory; DESFire uses standard AES authentication, a file system with per-application keys and ISO 14443-4 communication. Systems with a security requirement specify DESFire; systems that only read a card number work with either.
Which memory size should I order?
2 KB covers a single access or ID application; 4 KB and 8 KB suit cards that carry several applications such as access, canteen and transit. The system integrator who personalises the cards states the size the applications need.
Will my existing readers work with it?
Only if they support ISO 14443-4 and the DESFire command set. A reader that reads only the UID will still see the card but cannot authenticate it, so the security benefit is lost. Check the reader or controller model with us before ordering.
