Overview

Where the CR400 ceramic on-metal UHF tag fits

The CR400 is for metal items too small to carry a bar-type on-metal tag: hand tools, fittings, small machined parts and components. Its ceramic body keeps the tag readable when it sits directly on a metal surface, where paper and PET UHF labels detune and stop responding. At 10 × 5 × 3 mm it needs only a small flat patch on the part.

Fixed reader or handheld: two read ranges

The tag is rated up to 2.0 m on metal with a fixed reader and up to 1.0 m with a handheld. Plan around that difference: a fixed antenna at a tool-crib counter or along a conveyor can pick parts up at a distance, while handheld audits work best when the operator passes close to each shelf or drawer. Actual distance depends on reader power, antenna and the surface the tag is fixed to.

Memory you can write to

The Alien Higgs-3 chip carries a 96-bit EPC, a 64-bit TID and 512 bits of user memory, so a short part number or inspection date can be kept on the tag as well as in your software. It is rated for 100,000 write cycles and 50 years of data retention.

Fitting tips

  • Degrease the metal and press the adhesive backing down fully; an air gap under the tag costs range.
  • Encode the tags before fitting them to small parts.
  • Test samples on your own parts and reader before a full rollout.

Frequently asked questions

How far does the CR400 read on metal?
Up to 2.0 m with a fixed reader and up to 1.0 m with a handheld reader when the tag is mounted on metal. Real-world distance depends on reader power, antenna gain, tag orientation and the surface it is fixed to.
Which frequency does the CR400 use in India?
It is listed for 865–868 MHz, India’s licence-exempt UHF RFID band, and for 902–928 MHz in the US. It uses EPC Class 1 Gen 2 / ISO 18000-6C, the protocol used by standard UHF fixed and handheld readers.
Can the CR400 handle harsh workshop conditions?
It is IP68 rated, operates from -40 °C to +100 °C and can be stored from -40 °C to +150 °C. The ceramic body suits workshops and plants where printed labels would peel or wear off.
How is the CR400 attached?
It has an adhesive backing. Clean and degrease the metal first and press the whole tag flat. On parts that take heavy knocks, test the bond on samples before tagging the full batch.
Can CR400 tags be supplied encoded?
Yes. CR400 tags can be supplied with custom encoding and serial numbering, and samples are available for testing on your own assets before a bulk order.
