Overview

What the CP310 ceiling UHF RFID reader does

The CP310 is a fixed UHF RFID reader with its antenna built into a flat aluminium die-cast housing that mounts on the ceiling. It reads the tags in the zone below it and reports the RF phase of each reply along with the tag ID. Phase shifts as a tag moves, so software can tell whether an item is passing under the reader, standing still or heading in one direction.

With nothing at floor level, there is no pedestal for trolleys to hit or customers to notice, which suits shop floors, wards and offices.

Read zone and placement

The rated read distance is 1–3 m depending on the tag, and RF power is adjustable from 0 to 30 dBm to shrink or widen the zone. The antenna is optimised for short range to avoid stray reads from neighbouring areas. That makes the CP310 a fit for doorways, corridors and rooms where tagged items pass within a few metres of the ceiling. For tall warehouse roofs or long-range dock reads, a 4-port UHF reader with external antennas is usually the better tool.

Connecting it to your system

The CP310 build comes with PoE, Wi-Fi, RS232, USB and Wiegand 26, three relays and on-board storage for 1,000 tags. One PoE cable carries power and data; where PoE is not available it runs on 9–24 V DC. The relays and the multi-pin I/O terminal block can switch door strikes, alarms or stack lights.

In Active mode the reader streams reads as they happen; in Answer mode your software polls it when it needs data.

Where it is used

  • Retail: keeping track of where high-value tagged items sit on the floor.
  • Warehouses: hands-free monitoring of tagged goods passing through a doorway or portal.
  • Hospitals: following mobile medical equipment as it moves between wards.
  • Smart buildings: automated attendance and presence sensing with tagged staff cards.

CP310 or CP710?

The datasheet also lists a CP710 build on the Impinj E710, rated at 1,000 tags per second against 250 tags per second for the CP310. If many tagged items pass under the reader at once, mention the CP710 when you ask for a quote. Our reader specs guide explains how read range and antenna choice affect a site.

Typical applications

  • Retail item location
  • Warehouse portal tracking
  • Hospital equipment tracking
  • Staff attendance sensing
  • Doorway in/out monitoring

Frequently asked questions

How high can the CP310 be mounted?
The CP310 has a rated read distance of 1–3 m depending on the tag, so the tagged items must pass within that distance of the ceiling unit. It suits doorways, corridors and rooms with standard or false ceilings. Share your ceiling height and tag type when you ask for a quote so the read zone can be checked.
Can the CP310 tell which way a tagged item is moving?
Yes. Along with each tag ID it reports phase data, which your software uses to sense movement and direction beneath the reader. This is how it separates an item walking through a doorway from one that is simply sitting nearby.
Does the CP310 work on India’s UHF RFID band?
Yes. It is set to 865–868 MHz, the licence-exempt UHF RFID band in India. Other frequency bands can be configured on request for export projects.
Which tags work with the CP310?
Any passive UHF tag, label or card that follows ISO 18000-6C (EPC Gen2). Read distance depends on the tag size and what it is fixed to; metal items need on-metal tags.
How does the CP310 connect to my software or access control?
Data goes out over PoE Ethernet, Wi-Fi, RS232 or USB, and Wiegand 26 connects it to an access control panel. Its three relays can switch a door, alarm or light directly, and Bluetooth is available as an option.
