Overview
What the RA91 animal RFID tag reader does
The RA91 is a handheld reader for low-frequency animal identification tags. It uses full-duplex (FDX-B) passive RFID to the ISO 11784/11785 standard, works at 134.2 kHz and 125 kHz, and reads both FDX-B and EMID format tags. Hold it near an implanted glass tube transponder or an ear tag and the tag number appears on the OLED display.
The same unit has a CMOS barcode imager, so one device can identify an animal by its RFID tag and also scan the 1D or 2D barcode on a feed bag, vaccine pack or record card.
Read distance by tag type
Low-frequency animal tags are read at short range by design, and the distance depends mostly on the size of the tag's coil:
- 2–12 mm glass tube implants (pets, fish, small livestock): more than 15 cm.
- 30 mm animal ear tags: more than 25 cm.
A read takes under 100 ms, with a 0.5 s interval between reads, so a handler can work along a line of animals at a steady pace. Actual distance varies with the tag model.
Getting tag numbers into your records
The RA91 connects by cable, by 2.4G wireless or over Bluetooth, and is listed as compatible with Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 10 and CE), Linux and Android. Tag numbers can therefore go straight into a herd register, clinic software or a feeding controller instead of being copied by hand from an ear tag.
Choosing tags for the RA91
The RA91 reads LF animal tags only. It does not read UHF or HF (13.56 MHz) ear tags, which need a reader on their own frequency.
