Overview

What the ICL1P single-port UHF RFID module is for

The ICL1P is a UHF RFID reader supplied as a bare circuit board rather than a boxed reader. It has one antenna port, so it suits products and sites with exactly one read point: a kiosk, a turnstile head, a cabinet, a library counter or a single parking lane. You fit it inside your own enclosure, connect one UHF antenna and power, and your application receives the tag reads.

Performance and connectivity

The module uses an Impinj E3500 reader chip and reads tags at up to 15 m, at up to 400 reads per second. Treat 15 m as the upper limit with a good antenna and tag; small labels, tags on metal and crowded surroundings all shorten it.

It runs Linux on an ARM9 processor and is designed for continuous 24 × 365 operation, which matters at unattended points such as barrier controllers and attendance turnstiles. Wi-Fi is built in, with Bluetooth and 4G available as options, and the board can auto-scan and report over COM port or network. SDKs are available for all common languages, so reads go straight into your own software.

Getting a single read point right

With one port there is no second antenna to cover gaps, so antenna choice and placement do most of the work:

  • Aim the antenna at the exact spot where tags pass, not at the whole room.
  • Keep the antenna clear of large metal panels inside the enclosure.
  • Use a short, good-quality coaxial cable between the board and the antenna.
  • If tags outside the intended zone are being read, reduce output power or narrow the antenna angle before adding shielding.

ICL1P or a bigger module?

Choose the ICL1P when one antenna covers the read point. If a gate is too wide for one antenna, or you want several doors on one board, the 4-port ICL4P module adds antenna ports and PoE. All boards are listed under RFID modules, and the antenna and read zone guide helps you pick the antenna to pair with it.

Typical applications

  • Single-lane parking
  • Attendance turnstiles
  • Library issue counters
  • Access-controlled doors
  • Laundry drop points
  • OEM kiosks and cabinets

Frequently asked questions

What read range does the ICL1P give?
Up to 15 m, at up to 400 reads per second. The distance you actually get depends on the antenna you connect, the tag type and the surface it is fixed to; small labels and tags on metal read at much shorter distances. Test with your real tags at the planned mounting position.
Is the ICL1P a complete reader?
No. It is a board-level module without a housing or antenna. You mount it inside your own enclosure and connect one UHF antenna, power and your chosen interface. If you want a ready-to-mount reader with the antenna built in, see the integrated readers.
Should I choose a single-port or a four-port module?
Choose a single-port module like the ICL1P when one antenna covers the read point, for example one door, one counter or one parking lane. Choose a four-port board when a wide gate or several lanes must be covered from one unit.
How does the ICL1P connect to my software?
The module auto-scans and reports over COM port or network, has Wi-Fi built in, and offers Bluetooth and 4G as options. SDKs are available for all common languages, so tag reads can be handled directly in your own application.
Can the ICL1P run unattended?
Yes. It runs Linux on an ARM9 CPU designed for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year operation, so it can be left running inside a kiosk, turnstile or barrier controller.
