Overview

UHF RFID solar panel tag for module-level tracking

This is the ID-9640 UHF inlay converted into a 98 × 12 mm printed paper label and supplied on rolls for solar work. Each label gives a module its own readable identity, so a panel can be counted, traced and matched to its records from the production line to the plant.

As a paper label its expected life is about two years in normal operating conditions. A solar module stays outdoors for decades, so the tag is meant to be laminated onto the panel rather than left exposed on the frame.

Planning the tag position

Agree the position with your module design team before the first batch. Keep the tag away from the aluminium frame and the junction box where possible, since metal close to a UHF antenna cuts read range. Run a few laminated samples through your process and read them before committing a full roll.

Reading tagged panels in the field

With a UHF handheld a technician can read panels from the walkway, typically up to 6 m depending on the reader, antenna and mounting. Each read returns the tag's number, which your asset software links to the module serial, rating and installed location. The solar module RFID guide explains what to store against each panel. For a narrower 8 × 94 mm strip, compare the RFID Solar Panel Tag 0894-U9.

Typical applications

  • Solar module serialisation
  • Solar plant asset registers
  • Panel maintenance audits
  • Module service records

Frequently asked questions

How is the solar RFID tag fixed to the panel?
It is designed to be laminated onto the solar panel. The tag is a printed paper label with an expected life of about two years in normal operating conditions, so lamination is what protects it for long-term outdoor use on a module.
What is the read range of the solar panel tag?
Expect up to 6 m in typical use, with a rated range of 0–10 m. Actual distance depends on the reader's power and antenna, where the tag sits on the module and how close it is to the metal frame.
Does it work on India's UHF RFID band?
Yes. The tag covers 860–960 MHz, which includes the 865–868 MHz band that is licence-exempt in India under G.S.R. 853(E), 2021. Any standard UHF handheld or fixed reader configured for the Indian band can read it.
Which reader should a solar plant use?
A UHF handheld reader suits field audits and maintenance rounds, because the technician can read panels from the walkway. On a module production line, a fixed reader or desktop reader is used to write and verify each tag before lamination.
How is this different from the ID-9640 wet inlay?
Both use the 98 × 12 mm ID-9640 inlay. This product is a printed paper label on rolls for solar module tagging, while the ID-9640 wet inlay is an adhesive inlay on a glassine liner, supplied for converting and for library and asset labels.
