Overview

What the FX100 Android NFC handheld reader does

The FX100 is a dedicated handheld terminal for teams that work away from a desk. It runs Android for business, so you load the app your staff need, and it reads NFC cards and tags with a tap. Because it is small enough for a pocket and does only the work it is set up for, it is a practical alternative to handing out smartphones to field staff.

Security built into the hardware

For payments, KYC and other tasks that handle identity or money, the FX100 is secure by design:

  • Embedded secure element: a protected area of the hardware for storing keys and credentials apart from the main operating system.
  • SAM slot: takes a Secure Access Module, the small card that holds the keys for a closed card scheme such as a transit, campus or loyalty card, so the terminal can authenticate those cards.
  • OS security layer: the built-in operating system adds its own security controls on top of Android.

Managed remotely

The FX100 connects natively to mobile device management (MDM). MDM typically lets your IT team push app updates, change settings and lock a lost unit without collecting the devices, which matters when terminals are spread across branches, delivery routes or client sites. As a single-purpose business device it also has little street value, so it is a smaller theft target than a consumer phone.

Where it is used

The FX100 is used for mobile payment collection, customer KYC, field force management, facility management and home care services. In an Indian setting that could be a microfinance or insurance agent verifying customers in the field, a facility team logging rounds by tapping NFC tags at each checkpoint, or a service company recording home visits.

Is an NFC reader the right choice?

NFC works at 13.56 MHz over a few centimetres, which suits deliberate tap actions but not bulk counting. If you need to count stock or assets from a distance, choose a UHF reader from our RFID handheld readers range instead. Our NFC vs RFID guide explains the difference, and NFC tags and labels are available for checkpoint or asset tapping.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FX100 used for?
It is used for mobile payment, KYC, field management, facility management and home care services. It suits teams that need a small, secure, centrally managed device rather than a full smartphone.
Can we run our own application on the FX100?
Yes. It is based on Android for business, so you can deploy the application your team needs, and its native MDM connection lets IT roll out updates remotely.
What is the SAM slot for?
A SAM (Secure Access Module) holds the cryptographic keys for a closed card scheme, such as a transit, campus or loyalty card, so the terminal can authenticate those cards securely. The SAM is normally supplied by the card scheme operator.
Can the FX100 read UHF RFID tags?
No. It is an NFC device working at 13.56 MHz over a few centimetres. For UHF tags read at several metres, use a UHF handheld such as the CX1000 or CX1500N.
