Overview

Where the 7 dBi ID-ANT-7CP UHF RFID antenna fits

The ID-ANT-7CP sits in the middle of the gain range. A lower-gain antenna spreads its energy over a wider area, so a 7 dBi panel covers more floor or shelf than an 8–10 dBi panel while still reaching further than a 5 dBi short-range antenna. Its quoted range of about 5–8 m suits one antenna covering a room zone, a corridor section or a run of shelving.

At 270 × 270 × 35 mm it is small enough to sit in a ceiling tile, behind a false wall or on top of shelving, which keeps the hardware out of sight in public areas.

Why circular polarization matters indoors

Tags in hospitals, libraries and shops face every direction: a label on a wheelchair frame, a book spine, a hanging garment tag. A circular polarized antenna sends out a rotating field, so whether a tag reads depends much less on how it happens to be turned than it would with a linear antenna. That is why circular panels are the usual choice for zone reading where items are not lined up.

Typical installations

  • Hospitals: ceiling antennas in wards and corridors to locate tagged pumps, wheelchairs and portable equipment.
  • Libraries: above shelving or in the ceiling for inventory of tagged books.
  • Manufacturing: over a conveyor or assembly line to log tagged parts and work in progress as they pass.
  • Retail: flush in the ceiling for zone-by-zone stock counts.

Frequency and reader pairing

This model is specified for 902–928 MHz, the band used in the USA and other FCC markets. Indian sites run on 865–868 MHz, and an antenna only performs as rated on the band it is tuned for, so ask us to confirm the band variant before ordering for India, or look at an India-band model such as the IDTS-RA8190 8 dBi PCB antenna. The N-female port connects by coax to any fixed reader with external antenna ports, such as our UHF RFID 4-port readers. For gain and beam trade-offs, see the RFID antenna guide.

Typical applications

  • Hospital asset tracking
  • Library shelf inventory
  • Retail zone stock counts
  • Assembly line checkpoints
  • Ceiling-mounted read zones

Frequently asked questions

What read range does the ID-ANT-7CP give?
The quoted range is about 5–8 m for portal and zone reading. Actual range depends on reader output power, cable loss, the tag and what it is attached to, so test with your own tagged items before fixing the antenna positions.
Can I use this antenna for an installation in India?
It is specified for 902–928 MHz (FCC band), while India's licence-exempt UHF RFID band is 865–868 MHz. Ask us to confirm the band variant before ordering for an Indian site, or choose an India-band antenna such as the IDTS-RA8190 or IDTS-RA9350.
Is circular or linear polarization better for my use?
Circular, when tag orientation varies, as with books, garments or mobile equipment. Linear antennas suit lines where every tag faces the same way, such as cartons on a conveyor with the label always in the same position.
What do I need to connect it to a reader?
A fixed UHF reader with an external antenna port and a 50 Ω coax cable with an N-male plug at the antenna end. The antenna accepts up to 2 W input.
