Overview

A 10 mm NFC coin tag for very small objects

The ID-NFC-213-10 is a round NFC sticker only 10 mm across, built on NXP’s NTAG213 chip. It is made for one job: putting a tap-to-open NFC link on things where a standard 25 mm NFC sticker will not fit, such as a necklace clasp, a pen cap, an inhaler cap, a toy figure or a cosmetic tube. Any NFC-enabled Android phone or iPhone can read it.

What the tag can hold

NTAG213 gives 144 bytes of NDEF memory: enough for a web link, a short text or a simple contact record. Keep links short, using a short domain or link shortener, so they fit comfortably. After writing, a 32-bit password can protect the data from being overwritten, or the tag can be locked permanently so nobody can change your brand link.

Getting a reliable tap

A tiny antenna means a short read distance: 0–2 cm with a phone. Users need to touch the tag to the phone over its NFC antenna area, so a small printed tap icon near the tag helps. Avoid sticking it directly on metal, which detunes small HF antennas; use a spacer or an on-metal NFC tag there.

Sizing up the alternatives

If a narrow strip suits your product better than a circle, look at the 12 × 8.5 mm NTAG213 mini label, or browse all NFC tags. To write a tag yourself with a phone, see the NTAG213 programming guide.

Typical applications

  • Jewellery authentication
  • Collectibles and limited editions
  • Medical device identification
  • Cosmetic tube packaging
  • Premium cards and gift boxes

Frequently asked questions

How close does a phone need to be?
Within 0 to 2 cm. With a 10 mm antenna the phone has to practically touch the tag, ideally with the tag over the phone’s NFC antenna area on the back of the handset.
Can I lock the tag so customers cannot change the link?
Yes. NTAG213 supports a 32-bit password to write-protect the data, or the tag can be locked permanently after encoding. A permanent lock cannot be undone, so test the link on a few phones first.
Will it work with iPhone and Android?
Yes. NTAG213 is an NFC Forum Type 2 tag that NFC-enabled iPhones and Android phones read. On current phones a URL stored on the tag opens in the browser without a separate app.
Can you supply the tags pre-encoded?
Yes. Tags can be supplied blank for you to program, or encoded with your URL or a unique ID per tag. Send the link or the data file with your enquiry.
