Overview

NFC cards: choose the chip for the job

Every card in this listing is a CR80 card running at 13.56 MHz. What changes is the chip inside, and that decides which readers and which phones can use it. Pick the chip first, then the printing.

NTAG213 / 215 / 216

NFC Forum tags that NFC-enabled Android phones and iPhones read directly. Use them for tap-to-open business cards, review links, menus and loyalty sign-ups.

MIFARE Classic 1K / 4K

The usual chip for employee ID, door access and hotel keys, with 1 KB or 4 KB of sector-based memory. Built for HF access readers; not every phone can read it.

MIFARE DESFire EV1 / EV2

AES-128 encryption and up to 32 applications per card, for higher-security access, campus and transit-style schemes where card cloning is a concern.

ICODE SLIX (ISO 15693)

For library and inventory cards. With a long-range HF reader it can be read at up to 1.5 m, against about 10 cm for ISO 14443A cards.

Printing and personalisation

Cards are printed in full colour, offset or digital, with gloss or matte lamination, and can carry a logo, employee photo, QR code, barcode and sequential numbers. If you only need a printed staff card for an existing HF or LF access system, the printed RFID ID card is the simpler order; for a ready-made tap-to-share card, see the NFC business card. Frequently asked questions

Will an iPhone or Android phone read these cards?
NTAG213, NTAG215 and NTAG216 cards are NFC Forum tags, so NFC-enabled iPhones and Android phones read them. MIFARE Classic cards are designed for access readers and not every phone can read them, so choose an NTAG card for anything customers will tap with their own phone.
Which chip should I choose for door access?
MIFARE Classic 1K or 4K is the most common choice for employee ID and door access, with UID and sector-based authentication. Where cloning is a concern, MIFARE DESFire EV1 or EV2 adds AES-128 encryption. Check which chips your access controller supports before ordering.
How far away can the cards be read?
ISO 14443A cards (NTAG and MIFARE) read at up to about 10 cm on a standard reader or phone. ICODE SLIX cards to ISO 15693 can reach up to 1.5 m with a long-range HF reader. Actual distance depends on the reader and its antenna.
What printing options are available?
Full-colour offset or digital printing with gloss or matte lamination, personalised with your logo, photos, QR codes, barcodes and sequential numbers. Send your artwork, chip choice and quantity when you request a quote.
