Overview

What the IDTS-RWS9 HF desktop reader writer does

The IDTS-RWS9 belongs on the desk where cards are issued. Connect it to a PC over USB, place a 13.56 MHz HF card or tag on it, and your software can read the card's ID or write data to it. The card has to be within 0–5 cm, so the reader only talks to the card in front of the operator, which is exactly what you want when encoding cards one at a time.

Because it is supplied as a reader writer, it comes with free demo software for trying it out and the SDK for the read/write model for building it into your own application.

Typical jobs at the issuing desk

  • Employee and student ID cards: enrol each new card against a person in your attendance or access software before handing it over.
  • Membership and loyalty cards: write a member number or other data to the card at the counter.
  • Checks before a rollout: confirm that a sample batch of HF cards, labels or tags reads and writes correctly before you order in volume.

How it fits into your software

The reader supports answer, active and trigger operating modes, so it can either wait for commands from the host application or report cards on its own. The baud rate is selectable from 9600 to 115200 bps. A buzzer and LED confirm each read, so operators can work through a stack of cards without watching the screen. Power comes over the same USB cable, so there is no adapter on the desk.

The 123 × 95 × 27 mm housing is IP40 rated: it is made for indoor desks and counters, not for door frames or outdoor posts.

HF covers several card families at 13.56 MHz. Before ordering, tell us the chip in your existing cards (for example a MIFARE-type card) so we can confirm the RWS9 handles it. 125 kHz proximity cards need an LF reader instead.

Choosing between our HF desk readers

The HRD20 desktop reader is a slimmer unit with a longer 5–10 cm tap distance, suited to reading card numbers at a reception desk. The RWS9, sold as a reader writer, is the one to pick for an issuing desk where cards are encoded one at a time. See every model in HF RFID readers, and use our RFID cards buyer guide to choose matching cards.

Typical applications

  • Employee ID card issuing
  • Membership card enrolment
  • Access card encoding
  • Tag testing before rollout
  • Software development and testing

Frequently asked questions

What is the IDTS-RWS9 used for?
It reads and writes 13.56 MHz HF cards and tags from a PC. Typical jobs are issuing employee or member cards, encoding access cards and testing a batch of HF tags before a larger order.
What is the read range of the RWS9?
0–5 cm. HF is a short-range technology by design, so the card is placed on or just above the reader. A buzzer and LED confirm each read.
Does it come with software and an SDK?
Yes. Free demo software is included, along with the SDK for the read/write model, so the reader can be integrated into your own application. The baud rate is selectable from 9600 to 115200 bps.
Will it read my 125 kHz proximity cards?
No. The RWS9 works at 13.56 MHz only. For 125 kHz proximity cards and key fobs, use the LF USB desktop reader.
Does it need a separate power adapter?
No. It is powered over the same USB cable it uses to talk to the PC.
