Overview

On-metal UHF RFID label in six sizes

A standard UHF label stops responding when it is stuck straight onto steel, because the metal detunes its antenna. The UML label is built in layers instead: a printable PET face, an aluminium foil layer and a foam spacer. That lets it go directly onto racks, tools, panels and machine bodies, with a rated read range of 0.2–6 m on metal and up to 8 m off metal, depending on the reader and antenna.

Choosing a size

Larger labels generally read further and give more print area, so pick the biggest size the surface allows.

  • 30 × 15 mm and 55 × 15 mm for hand tools, rails, conduit and other narrow faces.
  • 60 × 25 mm and 65 × 35 mm for equipment housings, IT hardware and cabinets.
  • 70 × 30 mm and 80 × 40 mm for machinery, racking and metal containers.

Printing and reading

The face is printable, so an asset number or barcode can be added while the EPC is written on a UHF RFID printer. Group reading lets a handheld reader collect many labels in one sweep of a store room or rack aisle. To compare labels with hard tags and PCB tags, see the guide to choosing on-metal tags.

Typical applications

  • Metal tool tracking
  • Racking and shelving
  • Electrical panels
  • Machinery and equipment
  • IT hardware
  • Logistics assets

Frequently asked questions

Does the UML label read when stuck directly on metal?
Yes. Its PET, aluminium foil and foam build is made for metal surfaces, with a rated read range of 0.2–6 m on metal. An ordinary paper or PET UHF label would not read reliably in the same position.
Which size should I order?
Choose the largest size the mounting surface allows, since larger labels generally give more read distance and print area. The 30 × 15 and 55 × 15 mm strips suit tools and narrow rails; 70 × 30 and 80 × 40 mm suit machinery and racking. Select the size on this page before adding it to your quote.
Can the labels be printed and encoded?
Yes. The label is printable and programmable and works with standard UHF RFID printers, so asset numbers or barcodes are printed while the EPC is written. Printed and encoded labels can also be requested with your quote.
Does it work in India’s UHF band?
Yes. It covers 860–960 MHz, which includes India’s licence-exempt 865–868 MHz band, and follows EPC Gen2 / ISO/IEC 18000-6C, so any Gen2 UHF reader operating in India can read it.
What temperatures can it handle?
It is rated for operation from −40 °C to +85 °C and for storage from −40 °C to +120 °C.
