Overview

What the IDTS-HMR-65 mobile RFID reader does

The HMR-65 is a plug-in reader small enough to sit on the end of a phone or tablet. It connects and draws its power through a micro USB connector, so there is no battery to charge and no cable to carry. Hold a card within 5–10 cm and the buzzer confirms the read.

At 20 × 20 × 7.5 mm it is also small enough to build into a kiosk, a turnstile panel or a custom enclosure where a desktop reader will not fit.

Using it with a phone or tablet

Micro USB readers work with devices that have a micro USB port and support USB OTG (host mode). Your app also has to talk to the reader, so plan the software side before a rollout:

  1. Check the device. Confirm the phone or tablet has a micro USB port with OTG support, or an adapter that provides one.
  2. Test with your cards. Use the free demo software to confirm the reader picks up the cards you actually issue.
  3. Integrate. An SDK is provided for the read/write model, so your developers can build card reads into the app.

HF or LF version

Order the version that matches your cards: 13.56 MHz HF for smart cards such as MIFARE-type ID cards, or 125 kHz LF for proximity cards and key fobs. Each unit reads one band only. Matching cards are listed under HF cards and LF cards.

Where it is used

  • Checking ID or membership cards in the field, away from any desk
  • Marking attendance on a tablet at a work site or on a school bus
  • Verifying entry passes at the gate of an event
  • Adding card reading to kiosks and compact equipment

The housing is IP40 rated and works from -20 °C to +60 °C. The reader supports answer, active and trigger operating modes with a software-programmable reading rate. For desk, network and wearable options, see the rest of our HF RFID readers.

Typical applications

Frequently asked questions

Will the HMR-65 work with my Android phone?
It needs a device with a micro USB port that supports USB OTG (host mode), plus an app that communicates with the reader. Phones with a USB-C port need a micro USB to USB-C OTG adapter. Test with one unit and your own app before a large rollout.
Should I order the HF or the LF version?
Match it to your cards. Choose 13.56 MHz for HF smart cards such as MIFARE-type cards, or 125 kHz for LF proximity cards and key fobs. One unit reads one band.
What is the read range?
5–10 cm. The card is held close to the reader and a buzzer confirms each read.
Can it be built into a kiosk or turnstile?
Yes, its 20 × 20 × 7.5 mm size and micro USB power make it easy to fit inside a panel or enclosure. It is IP40 rated, so it should be mounted behind a cover rather than exposed to rain or dust.
Is there an SDK?
Yes. Free demo software is included, and an SDK is provided for the read/write model.
