Overview

UHF RFID wristband for newborn and infant identification

Babies cannot say who they are, and several newborns in one nursery can look alike. This infant wristband carries the identity both on the printed band and on an Alien Higgs 3 UHF chip, so staff confirm it with a scan instead of reading small print on a sleeping baby’s wrist.

How maternity units use it

  • Mother–baby matching: the baby’s band is linked to the mother’s record, and both are scanned before feeding, handover or discharge.
  • Nursery and ward exits: a fixed UHF reader at the door can log a band passing through; for a complete alerting setup, see the RFID infant monitoring system.
  • Paediatric wards and NICU: quick ID checks before medication or tests, without needing to tap the band.

Made for delicate skin

The band is soft, non-allergic PVC, dust and water proof, and single-use. Its tamper-proof button or adhesive closure cannot be undone and refitted on another infant without showing. Newborn bands are commonly worn on the wrist or ankle, so check the fit with a sample first.

Reading considerations

A small band on a small limb keeps the tag close to the body, which shortens UHF read distance, so plan exit reader positions with testing. Mothers can wear the matching adult UHF wristband.

Typical applications

  • Newborn identification
  • Mother–baby matching
  • Nursery exit monitoring
  • Paediatric ward ID
  • NICU patient ID

Frequently asked questions

Is the wristband safe on a newborn’s skin?
The band is made of soft, non-allergic PVC and has no battery. As with any identification band, nursing staff should check the fit and the skin underneath regularly.
How does the infant wristband help prevent baby mix-ups?
Each band carries a unique chip ID and printed details, and the tamper-proof closure means it cannot be moved to another baby without visible damage. Scanning the baby’s and mother’s bands together confirms the match at each handover.
Can it work with an infant security system at nursery exits?
It is a passive UHF band, so fixed UHF readers at the door can detect it. Read distance depends on the reader and the band’s closeness to the body, so test reader placement. For a complete setup, see our RFID Infant Monitoring System.
What frequency does the infant UHF wristband use in India?
Its Alien Higgs 3 chip works across 860–960 MHz, which includes India’s licence-exempt 865–868 MHz UHF band, so standard UHF readers set to the Indian band can read it.
Can the band be printed with the mother’s name?
Yes. Bands support variable data printing, including names, barcodes and QR codes, and can be pre-encoded on request so the chip and the print match.
