Overview

NFC / HF hospital wristband for bedside patient ID

This 13.56 MHz wristband puts the patient’s identity on a chip as well as on the printed band. A nurse taps the band with an HF reader or NFC-enabled handheld before giving medication, drawing a sample or starting a procedure, and the system shows whose record it is. HF and NFC read at close range, so only the band being checked is picked up, not the patient in the next bed.

Choosing the chip

  • NTAG203 / NTAG213: NFC tags that most NFC phones and tablets can read; a good fit when staff work on mobile devices.
  • MIFARE Ultralight or MIFARE Classic 1K: for hospitals whose staff ID and door cards already run on MIFARE readers.
  • ICODE (ISO 15693): for systems built on ISO 15693 readers.

The chip can also be customised on request to match an existing system.

Built for a hospital stay

The soft, non-allergic PVC strap is dust and water proof and fastens with a tamper-proof button or adhesive closure, so a band cannot be moved to another patient unnoticed. It is single-use and discarded at discharge. Bands come in several sizes and six standard colours, and can be printed with names, IDs, barcodes or QR codes and pre-encoded before delivery.

For UHF bands that are read at doorways, see the other RFID wristbands for hospitals. The RFID in hospitals guide covers patient safety workflows.

Typical applications

  • Patient identification
  • Bedside medication checks
  • Ward access control
  • Cashless payments
  • Leisure centre entry

Frequently asked questions

Can staff read this wristband with a phone?
With the NTAG203/213 chip, yes: most NFC-enabled smartphones can read it with a suitable app. MIFARE Classic and ICODE versions are best read with a dedicated HF reader. Tell us which devices your staff use so the chip can be matched to them.
Is the NFC hospital wristband tamper-proof and waterproof?
Yes. It has a tamper-proof button or adhesive closure, is dust and water proof, and is made of soft, non-allergic PVC for comfortable wear through an admission.
Can patient details and barcodes be printed on the band?
Yes. Bands can be printed with logo, text, variable barcodes, QR codes and data sets, and pre-encoded on request, so the printed number and the chip ID refer to the same patient record.
How are the wristbands packed?
They are supplied 250 wristbands per roll as standard. Custom packaging is available if you need smaller packs for individual wards.
How is this different from the UHF hospital wristbands?
This band is read at close range by tapping, which suits bedside checks and NFC devices. UHF bands are read from further away by fixed or handheld UHF readers, which suits logging patients as they pass through doorways.
